in the future i want to do a swap....i had my mind set for a e39 m5 motor and to do a smg tran but i was told it couldn't happen and i'm not dropping crazy money for a e60 m5 motor/tran so i'm left with a e46 m3 motor/smg or 540 motor/tran
which would ya'll do and what's the easiest and i know i'd need a ecu but if i go with the 540 do i need to change the cluster to a high obc? what else is involved?
i honestly can't stand a manual so the m5 is out of the question....love the v8 grumble but want to do something that's simple and better for my pockets....no chevy will go inside my bmw, lol........
i have someone who can service it but heard back things about the e46m3 smg....
again i'm trying to do something that is somewhat cheap and less on the headache side....
theres some kid in my town that's made his car look like mine but his is a v8 540 and sounds great.,..mine sounds good but i love his sound although i get better mpg's , lol
I think this is probably true. You'd only be out the net difference between your selling price and the 540 purchase price--not that significant a dollar difference for the performance gain, and you wouldn't have to worry about the nightmare of mismatched parts that a conversion would require you to cobble together.
for a complete 540i swap you would need the following and maybe more IIRC:
The 6speed Transmission
The Pedal Assembly
The Pedal Switches
The Clutch and Flywheel
Clutch Master Slave cylinder and piping
Shifter kit
Drive shaft
Rear differential
Transmission Mounts
And any necessary Harnesses one might need.
