Flashlight in the Glovebox of 328xi?

I was messing with my (new to me) 2007 328xi tonight. It was dark outside. Opened the glovebox and noticed that there appears to be a flashlight in there. Is this correct? I couldn't remove it, but it was dark so I didnt try too long.

Is it rechargeable?

It is a flashlight. It is rechargeable. It is a little hard to pull out.

Congrats on your new car. Welcome to the 'fest.

Couldn't almost any post be answered with a search? :0)

I wanted to ensure that I received specific & accurate info as it applies to my make, model and year - to avoid getting outdated, vague, or incomplete answers. I broke each topic down individually as opposed to Just tossing multiple topics into a single post willy nilly. This way we help other newcomers get answers in an organized, detailed manner.

I really appreciate the help. This forum has been amazing.

I apologize if I have been a nuisance. :0(

At this stage of the game with the E9X, yes. Don't worry, just keep it in mind for future reference.

I tugged pretty hard on it, but couldn't get it out. I wondered if it required a release button. It was dark so I didn't mess with it too long. Figured I would ask about it and try again in the morning.

It helps if you wiggle it loose. I usually end up pulling off the light cover before I get it out. These other guys are just jealous that you have one and they don't. BMW went a little cheap in the last two or three years and did some "de-contenting".

Once you do extract it, clean the contact pins with some fine sandpaper or emery cloth and wipe off the dust with a bit of WD-40. That should substantially reduce the force needed to insert and remove the flashlight. It's common for the contacts to corrode a bit if the flashlight is rarely (or never) used--like most. After several years of neglect it can be a real bear to work free.

First off, sorry about the way another poster got nasty with you. We're here to answer your questions, no need to search.

Yes, rechargeable flashlight but you never use it. BMW sells an accessory to convert it to a cigarette lighter socket which I found most useful for my GPS, iPod, etc.

Yes it is! Like BJ said, don't fret these other guys. It's not like we have much else to talk about on here anyway. If you ever need any questions answered, or help with anything on your car in person just shoot me a PM and i'll be glad to help.

BJ, Is the socket hot all the time or is it like the other cigarette lighter sockets that shut off when you turn off the car?

You are indeed correct. If we all used the search feature, posting here would be at the level of a trickle.

Glad to see some other Bimmerfesters were more helpful to you than the poster who disappointingly left you hanging with a non-answer.

Is my mind in a gutter, or does the thought of taking this post out of context make y'all laugh too?

Don't be afraid to ask any questions here, these folks are here to help, and yes Prof, that excerpt is funny. Do all 328's have a flashlight in the glove box? I'm running out after work to see if mine (coupe) does. Also, had I not RTFM the other day, I would never have known that there is a aux socket located under the glove box, left side. No cover on it and you'd never know it's there. Find something new every day.

New 3-series models do not have flashlights anymore, which, IMO, is a good thing since I wouldn't want to pay extra $$$ for an outdated, useless piece of technology. I have a good quality LED flashlight on my keychain already, and there are plenty of after-market LED flashlights, both rechargeable and not, which are much better in every way than whatever crap car manufacturers used to (some still do) put in their cars.

On my January build, the hole for the socket was there, but the innards weren't. (I still have the ashtray and cigarette lighter up front.) Still, this location was ideal so I bought an after market 12v outlet and started mucking about in the shop. I ended up with a great fit, wired it into the fuse panel and now have that under dash socket active. It's perfect for my Garmin which I have in place nearly all the time. The wires then are easy to route and it's nearly the same as if it were hard wired. And now I can close the lid to the ashtray.
