And for me too. For the school district, the opportunity to avoid the expense of buying (and storing) physical textbooks is a non-trivial amount of money. Maybe the difference between laying off more teachers versus not having to do the pink slip thing.

+1 to writing the info and learning it.

I also think it would be very difficult to study or reference a digital textbook, flipping back and forth between pages quickly, quickly reading, etc. idk I just cant grasp the whole digital book thing

Seriously Andy, it's very cool for you that your parents take you to nice places in the 'big seats', but for the record, it's not like you are the only 'fester that has ever seen international first class. Your fascination with the nuances doesn't bespeak worldliness or sophistication.
Once upon a time, a long long time ago I worked for a small regional airline as a baggage handler. Ok fine, it was 5 years ago and I was in college. Anyways, the airline shuttled rich New Yorkers out to their summer homes on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. Those are the only people I ever saw wearing those shorts. The shorts were usually paired up with one of those belts with the whales on it. I don't know....we laughed at how ridiculous they looked.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to indulge in the "finer" things in life, but I find that flaunting it is unnecessary.

Quick story:
My current job position has me managing a team of union trade workers. Most of the guys are over the age of 50 and have been with the company for 30+ years. They're the lucky ones that have survived layoffs through the years. Now they're being told what to do by someone in their mid 20s who had a starting salary much higher than the one they've earned through seniority over the years. I wear beat-up old jeans and work boots to my office everyday. Don't wear a watch. Don't shave everyday. And most certainly don't have any pictures of my BMW hanging up.

Between my age and education level, we have very little in common, so gaining their respect was difficult. But, by being a down-to-earth average guy who can speak their language, I've been able to make a connection. We've done some pretty good work.

Considering I also know (personally) union workers who barely produce more then a person in a persistent vegetative state I am not to sympathetic to the plight of the union worker. I think unions were needed back when they were created, but since then it's gone the complete opposite and the things they do, with the protections they get is insane.

The chance of losing your job, the idea of not getting a pension is a fact of life - no matter what era you live in. On top of that, union employees do get paid great money and get overtime. I know some union workers, which on top of their insane benefits, make over 100k/year (this is not benefits inclusive, just hourly plus OT).

Without getting too political, I agree with you for the most part Furb.

I will say this: When it's "go time" and there's a lot of work to be done, these guys bust their butts to get it done. There's no sitting around, and even with overtime they're not making much more than 70 grand a year. And as is common with any large shipbuilding project, a few of them will give end up giving their lives to get the job done.

Are deaths still fairly common with ship building these days?

Uhmmm....I don't know.

For your particular phone model, search on Google how to root it. Often, there is an application in the android market place you can download that'll do it straight on the phone, or an application to download to your local computer and hook up the phone via USB to do it with just one click of the mouse.

I have an Android few hackers are interested in and had a real easy time getting it rooted; I assume if you have one of the major Android phone from VZW or Sprint it should be a piece of cake to achieve. As always, things can happen that may break the phone.

I'd just point to professional athletes and celebrities. There is no reason to believe that just because you are rich you also have a good taste or know how to act right.

Nobody "dies" here. They "die" at the hospital. Definitely not as common as the old days (so I've heard). One a year maybe.

Oh god yea back in the old days people died all the time, but that was in most construction areas where the safety rule was "don't die" and if you did management didn't care (one of the reasons Unions came about).

Still, one a year is way more then what I thought would happen. Make sure you stay safe!

So I went diving the Lemuel Burrows.

55F - freaking cold

I spotted a 3+ foot flounder (took some pics)

Went back on the second dive to find the flounder again and spike him for dinner. Unfortunately he fled his spot.

Found my first artifact...not part of the ship, but I spotted it and I had to squeeze through parts of the ship to get it. It was a 6 oz fishing line weight Still - I was proud. From spotting it, in it's very hard to find nook, and then squeezing through.

Only bad thing as I came up from my second dive there was a fishing boat (tourist fishing boat) maybe 50 yards from ours.
1) It's a big NO NO for a boat to be that close to a dive boat flying it's diver down flag (which we were). They are supposed to be at least 300 feet away...they were nowhere near that distance
2) It's an even BIGGER no no to be fishing where there are divers. I mean - come on, you can really mess someone up.

Where are pirates when you need them!

A couple of chilli cheese hotdogs before the dive would allow you to remain warmer for longer....

I used to ice dive before most of you were born, even before you needed a PADI ticket or anything else other than the equipment. Spent many hours under the ice of Lake Cochituate with only a rope to find my way back with. The water temperature was around 39F. That's cold.

In person I am very uneasy about showing wealth. When I go to school, I take the E39, hide my watch and sunglasses in the car and say nothing of anything. One of my friends for instance was talking to this girl who does flaunt (like myself on the interwebs) and asked "what are those like $100 jeans?!"..
People ask "is that your car?" and I get very uneasy and uncomfortable. Its only when Im with people on our "level", that Im comfortable with that stuff. Like having Deron Williams compliment my sunglasses wish I was on that level
I park away from store fronts, I keep my glasses in em, and if you really want to know how paranoid I am, I have a 1911 in the glovebox whenever I leave PV/Scottsdale, and dont get on me about gun safety as I have gone through it all including the psychological part.

Furbs, throw a couple schnapps down before you jump in, perhaps even hot chocolate + peppermint schnapps

You used to dive? That's great. Is this back in the day before they had dive tables, gauges, or even knew what the Bends were?
