dealer says can't fix it

i am looking at a 2003 540 that my friend picked up at an auction. the computer behind the glove compartment was stolen. we bought a new computer and installed it. it will start after holding the key in the start position for more that 30sec all dash warning and info lights stay on, no a/c, power windows dont work, trans is in fail safe mode. temp indicator maxed to hot, no speedo no tach
took it to the dealer and they diagnosed it and said they had to program the new computer, kept it for a month then said they cannot fix it because the modules are not communicating with each other. its is a nice condition car otherwise, is it hopeless or are there things i can try. i can get it cheap if i can fix it. can.t believe a dealer can't fix it

The "new" computer is it really new?? a used one might not be able to be coded. I cant verify that 100% but that's what ive been told by 2 out of 4 bmw dealer service guys. One of them was the shop manager/foreman though

As long as it runs then the DME has the correct vin number already. take the car to a shop other than the dealership, One that specializes in BMW,AUDI,MERCEDES and they can fix the vin numbers in the other modules. Once they are re-aligned you will be able to see if any are bad and need replaced.

Yes, I done this yesterday to a 2002 325i. The manipulation dot went away and it took the code.

Joe...Is it true that Bav no longer does porting and no longer offers a high performance option?

Also, is back cutting the valves an option? Thanks

Yes, the late model engines have an issue with sleeving and torquing the cyl-head back down. so we no longer offer any rebuilds or performance porting.

It really sucks that BMW made disposable blocks...

Joe...

And your thoughts please on the very common and simple mod of back cutting the valves while one has the heads off of their 540? Or for any motor than is already apart and can use a tad more performance?

Its a suggested mod in many of the magazines but you have real world experience.

Dunno but if it does, it should be already in this listing:
- What is the definitive list of E39 modules which, when replaced, need to be 'coded'?

I'm not sure, that was not an option we ever offered. Sorry...

The module you replaced is the General Module. All others report to it. If any of the buses are damaged, this could be the problem.

Using DIS/MoDIC, a good diagnostician s/b able to troubleshoot to the module level, and verify the buses.
