Tranny swap

So I have just lost reverse in my 1992 535i automatic. It's up to 197k on the odometer so I figure there will be more trouble following this loss. I am set on doing a 5spd swap but not sure which transmission to look for. Anyone out there have any advice on this?

So I recently discovered this site through late night insomnia driven research. After overlooking the prices I noticed the "Product Fitment/Applications" section and noticed all of the different models, including 3-series models, these manual transmission will fit. If my assumption is correct then it seems the 5-speed manual transmission from my 1989 e30 m20 would fit/work with my 1992 e34 m30??? If this is true finding the parts will be a hell of a lot easier.

Please correct me if I am wrong in thinking this. I know the salvage yard I frequently visit has about 20 e30s and very few e34s (especially manuals) and I am getting antsy to get started on this. Pushing my car backwards out of parking spaces is not only a much needed workout, but also turning out to be very annoying when leaving work after a 14 hour day.

the tranny from the m20 will not work on the m30. The bell housings will not match up. You can use a 265/5 getrag, 260/5 getrag, 260/6 getrag those came in the e28. Since you are not worried about the bell housing sensors they will work. The 260/6 is most likely what other e34 535i have. If you are interested I have the pedals and master, center consul in either black or blue, the soft and hard lines and the slave. You would have to find a tranny, fly wheel/clutch, and the drive shaft. For the fly wheel the lightest one would be from a 83 533i, it has the same weight as a e28 M5.

Thanks Andy, I may have to take you up on those parts.

I was just at the local salvage yard and found a manual 533i. Next paycheck I'm gonna head back there and grab what I can off of it.

Ok, so I think I am going to go ahead and pull the tranny, driveshaft, pedals, flywheel, and shift linkage off of the e28 533i at the salvage yard. I have seen on a couple other forum posts that the output shaft has to be modified. Will I need to make any other modifications for it to work in my e34 535i?
