Smile Ambient lights install

It looks like one can easily install the ambient lights. there are four LED lights and 4 fiber optic cables that go under the door trim. These plus the four door handle covers with light holes will cost around $100. The wiring should be there in the doors already.

Has anyone explored this? Looks like an easy project. Ideas are welcomed.

Nice thought!
You think the wiring is in the doors, or are you sure of it?

I am pretty sure that the trim on the doors with ambient lighting is different than the trim on the doors that do not have ambient lighting. The trim on the doors with the ambient lighting protrudes out to accommodate the lights. It would appear that you would have to swap out the trim in addition to purchasing the lights.

The only trim that is different is the door handle cover which has a hole in it for the LED light. Other than that the trim that holds the fiber optic cable is the same (check it at the realOEM site).

I have the ambient lighting on my F10. On my F10's doors, the ambient lights run almost the entire width of the wood trim, which is on the door. Underneath the bottom of the trim (below the metal strip that runs along the bottom of the wood the trim), there is a clear plastic strip, which houses the ambient light and which runs almost the entire length or the trim. This results in the trim protruding out from the door to accommodate this feature. Perhaps I was mistaken in my earlier post. Does the trim on the door of an F10, which does not have ambient lighting, nevertheless have the housing for the ambient light feature?

Yes there is a space there where a system as you have got could easily fit.
So fitting it in the door seems not to be problematic, but will there be electricity in the door for it?

OK guys ... it looks like we have all we need to get this project started. The only thing left for me to do is to remove the door cover and confirm the presence of the connecting wires. I just need some info on the F10 cover removal. If anyone can help would be appreciated. Meanwhile here is the parts list (for my Veneto Beige interior):

51417226365/6 door handle cover front Veneto beige right/left with ambient light $8.87 each
51417226365/6 door handle cover rear Veneto beige right/left with ambient light $8.87 each

CRMESQ... please confirm the areas where the ambient lights come through. It should be the long door trim and door handles... anywhere else e.g. door storage pockets?

Speaking out of school here because I do not yet have my F10,
but on the E93 there are lights in the trim strip a few inches
from top of door panel (red) AND in the door storage pockets (white).

Are you only getting the pocket lights?

Door pockets have the lighting too.

that sound strange since there is only one part number for the door cover in the catalog....the light must then fit in some existing placeholder in the storage pocket. I need to check this out. Are you sure you are not confusing this with the light "under" the door or the projection from the top onto the storage pocket?

thanks for the photo.... I thought the light inside the door storage was reflection from the above. Would you be able to determine the location of the light source in the storage pocket?

63319208283 is the light for the storage for all models not just the ones with ambient. So I think this is the one that goes under the storage pocket and lights up when you open the door.

Don't overlook the downlights in the overhead. It's not visible in the photo and I am not clear if it is only in the ambient lighting part of the premium package, but I've got them. They wash the iDrive, shifter, drink holder area with light.

While I'm at it: the ambient lights vary directly with the instrument lighting adjustment. I have long since found that my ability to see the road well at night was much enhanced if I dimmed the panel as much as I could while still being able to see my instruments. Even with the orange light color, dimming them makes a significant difference. What I wish is that the ambient light would not dim so much since when I get the instruments well dimmed, the ambient lighting is too dim to be seen at all. Unfortunately there is no way to adjust this ratio - even asked my service guy. Too bad.

It's an LED strip. It's an ambient strip, stays on when the rest of the lights are out.

Sorry for the bad pics, but you get the idea. It's about 10" long, recessed up above the pocket. (and apparently I am not so even when applying the Vinylex, LOL)

The overhead LED's are integrated into the overhead console where the map reading lights are.

yes I just checked that out...the overheads are there in all models. so...it looks like 4 sets of 3 lights on each door: above the door handle fiber guide, door handle and the storage pocket strips. I am still working on IDing the storage pocket's strips. I dont see them anywhere in the catalogs. Maybe i skip the storage pockets..they look a bit overdone anyways. the coolest one is really the long fiber guide under the trim at the top of the door.

+1 I think that you could easily skip the pockets. I won't tell...

These partnumbers are for the door pockets, not for the trim.
Has someone allready found the partnumbers for the lightstrips behind the trim?

is anyone with the ambient lights brave enough to get us some pictures from under the top door trim? the trim pops out quite easily.

Thanks for the updated list....It looks like the part numbers have not hit the dealers list yet. We need to wait a few weeks. We are still missing the light source for the fiber optic cables at the top. I bought one cable and one light for the 328 convertible model which I believe would be the same or similar. LED was $10 and the FO cable $17. So it is about $27 per door if we just want to stick to the upper trim which is what I might do.

Still need to figure out how to remove the door panels.......
