The Rattle is there but it usually gets masked out by the louder exhaust sound because I have the passenger side exhaust in full time open position.

I cannot know if it a normal thing on 35i N55 X5, but I have had few people ask me that if that was a normal thing.

It is not just you! i have just taken my 135i N55 in to BMW for the same problem, it sounds liking a Pinging noise from the engine but the car however does not show any codes or pull power!

BMW cant figure out what is causing it so on Monday they will be doing some tests to try troubleshoot the problem, it is exactly as dreamerx5 describes underload the car pings or rattles (sounds abit like stones in the engine bay)

Any progress on your side???

BMW knows exactly what that noise is. The n54 engine on the 335's were making the same noise and now some of the x5's and 135's are making it as well. Not sure if the new 335 or 535's have the rattling sound but it drives me insane. I am working on getting video of the rattling noise on you tube shortly, I hope to have it up in a week. I have an attorney right now working on my case.

If the same noise was happening on the n54 im sure they found the solution? Where did you find info on that because ive been searching for days and your instance is the only one i have found that is exactly the same as mine?

Mein Auto: '11 335i,'02 M3, '08 X5,
FYI, my 335i with the n55 rattles loudly on cold starts for about 10-15 seconds. Haven't heard the rattle while driving. Very common issue if you look at the e9x boards.
