Mein Auto: 2006 BMW X3 3.0i (manual)
When choice was a luxury...

I've owned two BMWs, a Mini, and an Audi at this point. The only consistent aspects were 1) Manual Transmission and 2) NO navigation system.
In fact, I custom ordered my 2006 BMW 330Cic in order to get that particular combination. Now the new X3 loses on both counts! I'll just have to hold onto my 2006 X3 that much longer... My current 2006 X3 has a 6-spd manual, m-sport package, premium, premium stereo, PDC, and xenons.
Maybe the new X1 will come with a manual transmission, otherwise I'm done with BMW and will move "down market". Choice used to be a luxury. Now "luxury" car makers are forcing specific options. Kind of defeats the purpose of paying >$45K on a car when you can't actually get what you want.

My business partner wants to order one for his wife soon. Dealer says this is probably a short-lived mandate.

I placed the order for our X3 (will be my wife's primary vehicle) on May 16th. As of checking it today, it's in 01. Start of Production on the "Track Your BMW" webpage through bmwusa. We only ordered the Cold Weather and Premium packages and that's what the webpage is showing is being built.

Maybe they've retracted from requiring the Navigation or maybe I'm assuming too much that being in "Start of Production" mean that it's being built?

Yup, I think that is true. My business partner is ordered one for his wife with options similar to ours (no nav)..my contact at the dealer said it will be here in 4 weeks.

Yup, “Start of production” is good news and it is being built as we speak.
It won’t be long now before you’re taking it for a spin.

Cool

BMW salesman just emailed me a memo from BMW Automotive sales titled "X3 Navigation Update". It is dated May 19, 2011. It says:

" Please be advised for the X3's we have developed a solution that will no longer
force Navigation (6090 on all orders. Alternatively,X3 orders will require BMW
Assist with enhanced Bluetooth and USB (6NL) which will be released as a
standalone option at acost of $650.
There will be no charge for 6NL when ordered in combination with Technology
Package (ZTP) or Navigation (609).
Currently in O-line ordering, Vehicle Inquiry this option is showing N/C. This
is not the case; tthere is a charge of $650 for this option which will appear to-
morrow.

You need to understand that the crises in Japan has resulted in a worldwide shortage of certain processors. Alternative chips can be sourced, however the device footprint may require a different circuit board design... so it could be that the professional nav systems actually dont use Japan sourced devices, thus forcing the mandatory upgrade. This is not an eploitation of the unfortunate situation in Japan, it's fact, so stop speculating... Im involved in the PCB test business and I know whats happening..

Personally I do not think any of this is correct. I ordered mine in the beginning of May, and the dealer reallocated a build to me and my X3 was built the week of 10 May. I did not order, or was forced to get either Navigation or the BMW assist options. Those options did not show up on my build sheet nor were they showing on the My BMW experiance web page. YMMV

BTW, Glad to be here!
Paul

This is good news and hopefully means the mandatory navigation requirement has been lifted.

I just ordered today and had to get the BMW assist. Not that big of a deal for me because I was able to get options that I wanted without upgrading to the expensive tech package.

Gee... so, I guess the big conspiracy theory about BMW using the tsunami as an excuse to force higher-priced options was wrong?

Say it ain't so! (shewwwww)

I'm planning to order the Technology Package anyway, so the Nav System issue doesn't really matter to me. I admittedly suck at parking, and wanted the Parking Distance Control feature. Even more, I want the Rear View Camera with Top View.

I am glad for the mandatory navigation option, I would have regretted if I hadn't ordered the navigation. The nav has a beautiful almost hi def screen, makes the interior look classy. If you can afford it, go for it.

BMW Assist apparently still is a required option. If you go to the "build your own" page of the X3 website and click on "options" BMW Assist is automatically checked.

yea i saw that too, was hoping it was just some reminents on BMW's website vs. actually still being the case. I'm probably going to try and stop by the dealer today to put down a deposit...most likely will be asking them to throw it in for free (or very cheap) if they want to get the deal done. its a feature i have no desire for, and dont want to pay (i'd be better off if navigation was the required option...which is an option I wanted, but didnt want to pay $2200 for).

i'll update once when i'm at the dealer later with what they tell me.

called BMW customer service and asked how long BMW Assist would be a required option. The person i spoke with was clueless. First he was surprised that it was an option, when I pointed out to him that the website clearly indicates that it is, he said it would always be a required option because BMW recommends that everyone have it (?%!).

i placed an order and there was no mention of bmw assist. they have not entered it into the order system (but did through their programs which do pricing/etc) so maybe it will fail at that at that point. looks good so far though...

sadness. it is still required. my dealer called me when putting in the order and it is a required option. he ended up giving me the option for somewhere in the neighborhood of $460 since it wasnt a function i have any need for.
