2008 x5 3.0

I have done everything but pull the trigger on the following X5 for my wife:

2008 3.0
Monico Blue with Sand Beige Leather
Cold Weather, Premium, Rear Climate, Running Boards
35K miles
Remaining full warranty until 6/30/12 and CPO to 6/30/14.
$34,200 + tax & title
I have the service information sheets from the BMW system..no open campaigns...3 oils services completed...only 2 things of interest...."E70 fuel delivery unit B16 10 10 at 31K miles and "Radiator including module carrier leaking" at 32K miles.

I havent pulled the trigger because Im scared ****&*** about what appears to be terrible reliability with these vehicles.

We are giving up an 08 Volvo XC70 which I have had to do nothing to but oil, tires and brakes. I KNOW the two (2) vehicles cant failry be compaired but I feel like if I pull the trigger Im taking a serious gamble.
I dont expect much of a reply as I know there are plenty of similar posts that ask "Will I be OK with an 08 X5" "are X5's really that unreliable" ...I guess this post joins that group.....at least I feel better about spilling my guts to some who may understand the dilema.

help.

I am in the same situation as you as I am very hesitant to go get a 08-09 CPO with similar equipment and mileage due to possible reliability concerns and huge repair bills. So I too would like to hear more feedback from some longtime owners(3+ years). Though on the bright side, your deal seems pretty good compared to the ones i've seen.

Cpo

It is a great deal I have....and I have to make the decision in the next couple of hours because the finance rates go away as of 8/1.

jeff - here's some food for thought. i have a 2009 (not 2008) with 24,000 miles. flawless from day 1. you have cpo until 2014 - so - whilst i don't fully understand the limits or caps on cpo - i think it would cover major issues? as to pricing - here's a yardstick of sorts: my lease buyout (at 3/2012 when the car will be 3 yrs. old) is $33.074. perhaps that can give you an idea of how "good" your deal is. my car (when the lease is 'up' in about six months) will be then three years old and have an estimated value of $33,074. i know the real value may be higher or lower in six months' time (due to supply and demand). yours is ~ four years old and they want $34,200 including the cpo certification. only you can decide if that is "worth" it or not for that is the true definition of "market value" (willing buyer/willing seller). as to 'finance rates going away on 1 august' - there will most likely be a continuation of the finance programme - but that is always the rub isn't it? do you pull the trigger now or wait until next month to see what better (or worse) deal might come along? sigh. you say in the latest post that it is a great deal you have - so go seize the day - it's only a car - there are bigger things to worry about in life.

You have 1yr left on full warranty and CPO for another two. Like any car, things can go wrong and as long as you keep this in mind, you will be OK.

I have 2010 with same color/options and love the combination.

Good luck and you will love the ride.

I think that is a great buy. go for it, you are still covered under warranty for a while so don't fret.

To purchase or not to purchase

I had a first hand look at the vehicle yesterday....holy eye opening in regards to what is acceptable condition by New York City standards versus "country" (Connecticut) standards.....the rear bumper cover was beat to "bleep" and the interior wood trim was cracked...I was surprised to hear from this dealership that BMW no longer replaces cracked wood trim under warranty.....as many of us know this a reoccurring issue on a lot of BMW models including my beloved E39 525i....how could that be true???....the cracking is a manufacturers defect if I ever saw one....any way if you add up the bumper cover and the wood trim at the center console and the two (2) doors it comes to about $1350 or so material only.....I would DIY replacement.......In addition, the two (2) rear tires on the car looked bad...had some dry rot cracking in the tread and must have only passed CPO inspection by a fine hair......the cost of all these issues as I see them probably get this car back up to over $36K or so......which is a better comparison to other CPO's out there right now.....but the color combinations is really really nice looking I agree.....there is another one I am looking at right now which is bronze exterior with the tobacco interior at another dealer which seems to be a nice and unique combo.......I was able to see the tobacco interior first hand yesterday.....it is much better looking in person...the pictures out there lighten it up too much with the flash....it is a true brown color.....the search continues.....

I was going to reply to the first message with "Have you done a PPI (pre purchase inspection) by a qualified mechanic and NOT at the dealer who is selling the car?

You can clearly see that BMW dealership CPOs are BS and CANNOT be relied upon as any assurance of quality. If that dealer was CPOing that POS, you can be sure that had you brought it and had issues with some of the items, BMWNA would have been nowhere to be found and you would have been on your own. Indeed, who knows that car may have had major or minor paint and body work, and again youd be on your own.

Find a reputable shop in the area that works on BMW's and have them inspect the vehicle. The CPO is no substitute for this. Also, have the dealer provide you with the carfax.

PPI and new options

Thanks for the input guys.....Im painfully aware of the necessity of a PPI as it saved me over $1000 when purchasing my E39 from a "dealer" in VA last year....

I have two (2) new options:

08 3.0, Monico Blue, Sandbeige, Premium, Winter, Rear Climate, 31K miles for $34,900....CPO 6/14

08 3.0, Plat Bronze Metallic, Sandbeige, Premium, Winter, Rear Climate, 30K miles for $35,250...CPO 5/14

The platinum bronze is in CT and the blue is in NJ...Im leaning toward the Plat. Bronze due to ease of transaction but unsure about the color combo with sandbeige.....is it too much tan???

All very good deals Jeff. If the maintenance histories look clean those are both good buys. I recently bought an 08 CPO for just over $35,250 out the door and haven't been concerned since because of the extended warranty. You have 3 yr and 70K miles warranty. I would pull the trigger if the financing is holding steady at the 4.9% they have been offering on the X5's.

Be sure you get the PPI! The Volvo sounds like it worked well for your wife. Did you consider the new upgraded XC70 or if you need more room the XC90? Anyway good luck with your X5 quest. BTW the bronze one will not show the dirt as much.

The Volvo XC70 is a great car and there is really no reason to get rid of it other than I am a BMW fanatic and I made the mistake of letting my wife test drive an X5...now the XC70 is a piece of crap.

If your wife enjoys listening to music make sure you make her listen to the stock stereo if they don't come with the upgraded system. My wife isn't thrilled with the quality of the base system and I am mostly likely going to have to get a custom system installed as long as it won't void the CPO Warranty.

Hello guys, new to the forums here...

Jeff, those both seem like excellent choices. With CPO, you get a piece of mind for those three years. Personally, I would go with the Monaco Blue, as it provides nice contrast between the interior and exterior. The Plat Bronze with sand beige interior seems too sandy to me and doesn't offer that dark tone the Monaco Blue provides.

Would you mind providing a link to the Plat Bronze? (I rarely see Plat Bronze's). Thanks.

Yes the list is $39,999 and yes they are dropping the price of the car to $35,250.00....I have just about every dealer within 100 miles of me dropping down this kind of money.

Good news hot off the press...I have a hold deposit on a Deep Green Metallic with Sandbeige leather at another CT dealer that was just listed today......premium and cold weather for $35,900...a bit higher and no rear climate...but CPO through 8/25/14 and just 30,050 miles...1 owner....I bought an 01 330CI from this dealer back in the day and had a good experience and received a great car.....test driving and hopefully negotiating a bit more out of it 9am tomorrow!!!!!....

Another great deal...

FYI this car is a great deal also if anyone in the area is interested...they quoted $35,910 absolute bottom line....I just dont care about navigation which is probably already outdated and the miles and warranty are significantly less than the Deep Green.

Great deal. How much did you negotiate off what the dealership was asking? I've been seing similar x5's anywhere from 36-41k.

Asking

$38,999 was asking price. Again, everyone in the CT area was dropping to the $35K range. I also noticed yesterday that most had dropped their asking prices significantly since I purchased last Wednesday. Im sure it had to do with the 09's coming off lease before you know it.

That is a good price which is the FMV of these vehicles these days. I took delivery of 08 for $38,400 dropped from 41K but with the addition of 3rd row which is extremely limited and the sport and tech. package but with the add on's I'm guessing I was around the same ball park as well. Although mine was not CPO so I had to buy an extended 3rd party warranty that ran me $3400 which cuts into my factory warranty which I have until 3/2012 and about 20K miles left. I'm starting to regret pulling the trigger so fast on the warranty but also read the horror stories. Great SAV overall. Had it for less than a week but it runs flawlessly thus far.

08 X5 Trouble Free? So far...

I would also like to report a week and half of trouble free driving. (knock on wood) As soon as I picked it up on Wednesday the 3rd I took it on a "hall pass" long weekend with the guys down to the Delaware Shore. About 650 miles on it so far. I am having technical issues with my key and the seat position error which is annoying but haven't taken the time to figure it out yet. I also took a small piece of metal in one of the BRAND NEW run flats...but flat tires can happen on any car....I plugged it myself and has been holding fine.....if it goes i'm going to buy 4 regular tires all around.

some one find me one!!! haha

Ive went thinking I wanted an X3....to a Sport loaded X3....to now an X5 -___- *sigh. I ride sportbikes, so thinking the extra tow capacity on the X5 would be nice. That and I think the new design of the X5 is gorgeous!

How soon are the 09s coming in off lease? I wonder if it's worth it to wait.... But that makes sense they are starting to drop the prices on the 08s.

Looking for a black/white X5 with dark interior....

http://www.prestigebmw.com/VehicleDe...-NJ/1146453553

^That one seems priced pretty low, but it has no options other than Cold Weather....

ANy of you X5 owners recommend "Must have" options?

Rear Climate

I do wish I could have found one with the rear climate package. We have a 2 year old and the tint with the sunshades would have been nice. I hate the cheesy look of the suction cup child sunshades.

I am probably going to have the rear windows tinted to match the factory look and buy the accessory sunshades.

Also, I have found the seats to be extremely hard on the rear end. Comfort seats would be nice but I cant say with all the research could I find an off lease 3.0 with Comfort Seats.

I think the bare minimum packages are winter, premium and the Ipod interface. The power rear tailgate is also nice.
