Finally sat in a RX8
Finally had a chance to sit in a RX8, but did not drive it. Overall, it seems to be a very attractive car, both inside and out. I wonder about head room though. At 5'8", I am shorter than average, but my head almost touches the liner when the driver seat is properly adjusted. How do you tall guys manage to fit in the RX8?
The trunk is tiny. There is no spare tire. Does the RX8 come with run-flat tires? Finally, I read in a Canadian online mag that the Mazda recommends RX8 owners to check the engine oil after every two fill-ups, and top the oil if needed. Does the RX8 really burn that much oil? Ed

As I understand it, the RX-8 injects oil. So it could. I believe Mazda is over-recommending to get people to think about it, though.
And skip the sunroof and you've got loads of headroom.

At 6' 0" and no sunroof, I don't have any headroom issues, although it's a little tight on the left side with a helmet. No run flats. A spare isn't standard, but it is an option. Rotary engines burn a little oil by design. In about 2,400 miles the level has dropped just a bit, but not enough to add any. other people have been reporting more oil usage, though. Seems to be variable, like gas mileage.

At 6'4" I could not comfortably drive a non-sunroof model...
The last gen RX7 and the RX 8 are the only cars I have tried to drive and couldnt because of my size. I have driven every generation MR2 and the Miata (top up and down). I didnt weven try to sit in the Elise....figured my head would poke out above the windscreen...

I'm 5' 10" and have no issues with the headroom. I find the amount of interior room perfect though the door is closer to me then it was in the 330i but I like that feeling because it is more sports-car like
As far as the spare tire, I put a spare tire kit (it's a $399 option) in mine because I didn't feel comfortable driving around without a spare tire. Fortunately for me, I paid $0. for mine since my step-fathers yellow RX8 came with it from the factory and he didn't want it. Now after living with the RX8 for over a month I have to say I am in love with the way this car drives. I used to be considering the E90 but I don't know if I would go the sedan route after owning this car. As I've said over and over again, it is so in touch with the road that it is truly amazing !! |
