ran out of gas, trouble starting

I ran out of gas. Put gas and car started with no problems, drove home. Next morning it started up and it ran for several blocks and then starting choking and cut off. Couldn't get it started for about half hour, then it started but would not stay on, battery now dead. Had it towed. They charged the battery and the car started and they let it idle for about a half hour, it then shut off, and they couldn't start it again. Any ideas??

Bad fuel pump? There's two; one in the tank, one under the car. Starving a pump has been known to precipitate a failure. Could possibly be a fuel pump relay issue. You can switch it with the horn relay; they're the same.

It ended up being a bad fuel pump in the tank.
