I met with a tech in Houston an hr ago. He suggested taking the heads off and using Sea Foam. Carbon Build up is a common issue with several BMW V8's and some of the straight 6's as well. He quoted me for $200.00. I did sea foam about 8months ago, but I just put it in the gas tank I never thought about taking the head off and pouring it in there. He also informed me he has performed this job on two 7-series BMW's and was successful at it.

@Adboles - No misprint. The correct amount is $200.00 I am quoted this price because he has done this job twice. He will have my car for two days. I will keep everyone posted. I am scheduling my appointment for tuesday or wednesday of this week.

mrringtone, please let us know if this corrects the secondary air flow too low problem that causes the codes 0491 and 0492 to show up. I would like to talk to him and ask him if he can share how he does this for $200.00 with my mechanic here in Tennessee!! Thank you, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I remember years ago a procedure I used on a 540i I had that I read about for what I recall was carbon build up. It involves the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator, but looking on realoem, our pressure regulator is part of our fuel filter. Is that correct or is there a seperate fuel pressure regulator elsewhere?

I may have a possible solution if I can get confirmation about our fuel pressure regulator.

After driving my car for a few days. My check engine light did come back on. Since the job is covered under the shops 12month 12,000 miles warranty I will dropping my car off today for a second treatment. The good news is while driving I got 25.5 MPG's which has never happened since owning this car. I believe a small amount was remove but not enough, the tech is determined to have this resolved. I will keep you posted in the next 48-72 hours.

I spoke to my Indy about the Seafoam thing. He said they tried this remedy several times without success. He said the carbon is so stubborn and hard that only honing out will clean properly.

I regularly get 29 MPG on road trips and I drive 70+. Your amazement at 25 MPG now has me questioning the accuracy of my trip computer.

I had the 2 codes p0491 and po492 and my car failed aircare (emissions testing), this is very common problem in the 7 series car. To fix this problems is very expensive...and even after you fix the problems the codes will pop up again. My dealer told me there is no point in fixing these problems as they do not have any affect on the performance of the car. So disabled the secondary air system for me at a cost of 500 dollars, been 2 weeks now and the codes have not come back on and the car passed aircare.
