Talking My 2014 X3 is almost here

Hey all, new to the forum. My dealer just told me my custom order would be arriving next week. Prior to ordering, I learned a lot here and over at xbimmers, so I thought I'd share the specs and some details about the buying experience in case it helps someone else.

Code:
2014 X3 xDrive28i

Vermilion Red Metallic
Black 'Nevada' Leather

Electronic Damping Control
Roof rails in Aluminum Satin
Fineline Siena wood trim
Navigation system
Premium audio system
Cold Weather Package

    Heated front seats
    Heated Steering Wheel
    Retractable headlight washers
    Heated rear seats

Dynamic Handling Package

    Variable sport steering
    Performance Control

Lighting Package

    Xenon headlights
    Adaptive light control

Premium Package

    Lumbar support
Satellite radio with 1 year subscription
    Comfort Access keyless entry
    Panoramic moonroof
The xDrive35i was very tempting, but I spend most of my driving in traffic and city streets so I decided to go for the gas savings. By all accounts the newish N20 turbo-4 is no slouch and should be plenty fast for my needs. I'm coming from an '03 330xi, so I'll miss the silky smoothness of the inline-6 but twin-scroll turbos are fun too.

The only other hard decision was the M-Sport package or not. I liked the idea of the seats plus the body kit and wheels. I was worried that the 19" wheels would make the ride harsher and I would need separate winter wheels. I decided the dynamic handling pack would give me the real handling gains and the M-Sport was more cosmetic so I skipped it. Plus I actually like the black trim versus the body colored on the MSport.

Test driving, custom ordering, and negotiation was pretty straightforward. BMWConfig.com was a HUGE help as I just printed out the sheet with what I wanted, and started with that invoice price. I got hit by the Oct 1 price increases on the base and some options, but my sales adviser actually printed out his invoice versus MSRP sheet and it checked out. It was my first time buying a new car and I'm not a good negotiator so I ended up paying a little higher over invoice than I wanted, but still feel like I got a good deal. He's literally throwing in the floor mats.

I can't wait for it to show up next week- just in time for a New England winter. I'm sure I'll be on here with some questions soon enough.

Welcome to bimmerfest and congrats from another Vermillion Red orderer.

It may be that your salesman is throwing in all-weather mats or something, but as far as I know, mats are standard on BMWs for the past year or so.

I just picked up my Blue Water today.. gorgeous colour... Sand Beige leather.. I'll post some pics tomorrow, but I love it.. we have the Premium, Cold Weather, and Technology package

The biggest change over my E60 is the technology package, which I didn't get the run-down on at the dealer (my wife is 8 months pregnant - this is going to be her car - and we're going to go down for the hour long lesson later in the week)
  • Head-up Display
    Awesome feature.. very clear resolution
  • Advanced Real-Time Traffic Information
We didn't drive it enough to know if this is really useful.. where we live, the I95 is always traffic
  • BMW Online
Still no clue what this is... I guess I might crack open the paper owners manual (no electronic version is in BMW's "My BMW" online
  • Navigation system
It came with 2013-2 maps and doesn't have my street. Based on other posts on Bimmerfest, it appears the 2014 maps are only just out now.. I'm hoping we can get he update this week when we go for the lesson.
  • Enhanced USB and Bluetooth plus Smartphone Integration
    Works as expected
  • BMW Apps
I don't know how this is any different to BMW online
  • Remote Services
    No clue here

I look forward to your pics. Congrats again on your baby girl! The X3 is the perfect vehicle for her

I debated going for the Tech Package and didn't get it but after reading how great the HUD is, maybe I should have gotten it

Congrats on your blue water X3s guys. Lib, if the X3 was for you and not your wife, what color would you have picked? I went with nav instead of tech package, so I wonder if I'll miss the HUD...

I finalized the paperwork on Friday and expect to pick mine up on Wednesday. Does anyone know if a basic coding session should be included at delivery, to set up the owner's preferences?

About the floor mats- I think my adviser said that basic floor mats are standard (confirmed on spec sheet) but that the accessory ones are nicer somehow. They're listed separately on the accessory page:
Quote:
Precision-cut mats with special Velcro® retention system are made to match the carpet color of your X3. Resist water and staining while adding cushioned comfort. Detailed with BMW lettering. Available in sets of 4.

I didn't know what to make of HUD as I never had it nor was it available in any prev BMW I owned but it is awesome. Takes some getting used to as my eyes fixated on it constantly for the first few days but now I just glance down at it for all the info.

It is a must have in any BMW I have going forward.

Lib, below are pop-up descriptions for features listed under the Tech Package on BMW's build page. They might help you get started if you haven't seen them before.

That's a good question.. I would have said carbon black or the bronze metallic based on the online configurator. But I didn't quite like the bronze in overcast light, and the blue water is quite stunning.

My sales guy coded it quickly for us with a handful of his personal preferences. I am waiting on a cable to arrive so I can code the F25 and E60 on my own, but this weekend when we go back for the full hour long delivery lesson I am going to ask and see if they'll make a few changes then. Mostly I want the mirrors to fold in when I lock the car.

The other thing I am hoping for is a 2014 map update. I saw last night that the navigation has the 2013-2 maps, and the 2014 map update is just rolling out now (this coming week according to the general forum.. it's already out for CIC based autos).

Thanks, I figured out the BMW Online..

The apps I am going to go and try to sort out now.. I installed a few things onto my iPhone but I couldn't get them to connect. I suspect I have to hard wire the phone in.
EDIT: Yup.. plug it into USB and all sorts of goodies pop up.

As for the BMW Remote, I don't have a BMW Assist account... I guess the hour long delivery rundown from the delivery specialist is key.

Lib, Congrats on your Blue Water X3. I love the color. In the two years that I've owned mine, I have not seen another like it in my area.

I can't say I notice the X3 or X5 cars in my area.. or haven't until now. Today we drove past a black X3 at the area mall..

And then funnily enough we pulled up next to a nearly identical Blue Water X3 when we went for brunch. I wish I had snapped a phone pic.... I am sure I will see the car again, it's a small town.

If features and settings can be changed by using the iDrive controller, then your IBM dealer will show you how to do that. I suspect that this is the type of change that your sales guy made.

Changes that require true coding, such as the mirror folding that you desire, cannot be done using the iDrive, and your BMW dealer does not have the software required to make the changes.

There is a tech there that is into coding... But I perhaps due to warranty issues he can't do it to customer vehicles.

I can wait for my cable to come and do it myself..

Thanks for clearing that up. When I had my E46 330xi, a dealer had a preferences sheet you could fill out and they would code the car with those preferences- things like auto-lock when driving, whether unlock on the FOB opens driver door or all doors, etc.

I'm expecting an x3 in the next few weeks (So Cal). I don't have the time to figure out how to code myself. Are there people i can hire to code my car? If so, where do I find them and what is a reasonable amount to pay?

There is a coding forum, plus you can check in the SoCal forum too.

Worst case you have online places like Bimmertech but they are quite expensive.
