X3 possesses the newer technology generation of BMW whereas X5 dates back a few years ago (although the introduced a new x5 a year ago). The X3's technology is even newer than the X1 (which is surprisingly just released in NA! Don't know why it was so late?!)
X5 is a great car, but I would not compare it with the X3. X5 is more roomy and depending on how far you want to go with enhancements, it can be very pricy. The X3 however already has many of the features that are considered to be an 'option' in X5s and X6s as standard...again, because it is a newer technology and generation...

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Decided to stay with the X3. It's in status 112 now.

Compared to X3, the only thing good about X5 is the available optional spare tire. Being an older model, it may also be more reliable.

Since it sounds like your first BMW, read / research more, especially if you plan to keep the car for 6+ years.

X5 has some of the worst reliability out there. Reviews are bad!

Since X3s are built at the same place, and engineering wise the two cars are not that different, owners better hold their breath about this.

Yes, this is my first BMW. Never dreamed of buying a BMW until the 2011 Ford Explorer fell short of my expectations and I started looking at other brands. Not sure how long I will keep the car. I guess it depends how dependable it is. Thought I would only keep my current car 3 years but I've had it almost 8 years now. Before that I kept my 1998 Explorer 5 years and before that my 1989 Thunderbird 9 years. I find it hard to break away from a car that I love when it treats me right. I've been spending lots of time on the internet lately researching the car and will continue to do so.

I'm excited now to get my car, but will have to wait until early June to pick it up.
