Stereo Upgrades for 93 E36

I just bought a 93 E36 with a dead head unit and 10 speaker stereo system. The guy I bought it from said the amp is dead, so I am not sure what is exactly wrong. There is nothing showing up on the display and no sound out of the spekaers. Becasue of this, I came up with an idea to just completely bypass the factory system and install an aftermarket head unit and speakers: Is is possible to use only the power wire from the factory harness to power a new CD head unit? From there I would run new speaker wire to power a set of 5 1/4 components in the front kick panels and factors tweeter location (I would not use the factory midrange speaker). For the rear I would run new speaker wire to a set of 5 1/4 2 way speakers. What do you guys think about my idea? Would this be the best way to go, or should I figure out how to use the factory harness and speaker wiring, while bypassing the factory amp as well?
