I am taking my car back in for an oil change when I return from vacation at which point I will let my SA know it's happening AGAIN, not a month after they replaced all AC pullies, tensionors and belts.

They are replacing my compressor. Sounds like a lot of these are failing.

I just took a Flip video of my car screeching in prep for Monday's visit to the dealer. Hoping they're able to get this issue addressed for the D community. Anyone have any idea if the 328i and 335i are experiencing the same issues? My 07 335i never made a peep...

My 08 335i never made a sound either, seems this is a D issue.

I just had the nasty "squeal" after a cold start up on my new d with only 200 miles, and I am virtually certain it sounded consistent with an AC compressor bearing problem. I had not even noticed this thread yet, but of course now it has caught my attention.
Perhaps the belts are being tightened too tight at the factory and stressing the compressor bearings?. ![]() I took it in today and my dealer was very accomodating, but "apparently" the dealer was not able to replicate the problem. I'm told they loosened it up, and then tightened it a couple times, but no confirmation for certain that the AC compressor tension was the culprit. Anyway, I got to drive around in a nice 135i sport convertible for a few hours and that was a nice touch, but I hope that is the end of that nasty squeal problem for my d.

We had the same squeal that began at approximately 8,000 miles and was intermittent. I finally narrowed it down just by trial and error to the belt that runs the air conditioner compressor. Dealer replaced at no charge--took a couple of hours---problem now solved.

Update after 3 weeks.
After the compressor replacement on July 6th, everything is running beautifully. No more squeal. The belt looks clean so far.
@BMW Power What is your waiting time for that AC compressor unit? Did they have to order from Munich? |

They ordered on Monday and it is supposed to be here tomorrow. They didn't say where they ordered from, but it sounds local.

I was thinking about buying a new 335d, but this problem has me thinking twice. I hope BMW comes up with a long term fix soon.

I would think they would have this solved before the warranty runs out. Getting mine back today.

My d is being looked at, hopefully it will get above 90
so they can reproduce squealing. SA has my video recording, and I told him I have 3 more if that is not enough ![]() Getting new rear brakes done as well, not even 17k on them. I thought it was just sensor since pads still look good but I won't argue.

If it were a compressor I wouldn't think the squeal would go away for 2 weeks after having my tensioners and AC belts replaced. It's also weather dependent which leads me to believe it has more to do with the belt/pulley system. I would think if the compressor were bad it would squeal all of the time or randomly as opposed to I can predict under what conditions it will squeal with reasonable accuracy.

Just got my 335d back after three days with the service department to fix "the squeal"(second visit for this). It was determined that the accessory belt was the issue and a "non oem" belt was installed. Compressor and pulleys all checked out OK. The service records indicate that a PUMA case was opened. Today, the car was out for six hours in the sun at 90 degrees and no squeal when it started up..hope it is fixed.
By the way.. had a 328i auto for a loaner. REALLY glad to get the D back...what a dog!!! |

I am so glad I am not the only one who experienced this!
Really glad I found this thread. Just pulling out of the driveway and the A/C was on and the screeching noise sounded under the hood. I'm taking my new 335d I just picked up a week ago - very embarrassing for new car to do this ! Will be watching this thread closely for updates and resolution. |

This morning I got my d back from the dealer for repair of the "squeeling belt syndrome".
![]() On the first try the dealer was not able to replicate the problem, this time I took videos to provide for evidence. THe service record did document a noisy belt this time, and as I understand it, BMW now has some history of the problem, and sent them a Gates (non-oem) belt overnight express as a replacement. So far, it seems like the fix is working, and I certainly hope this is the last of the "sqeeling belt" for my car. As fate would have it my neighbor walked right by on Saturday after I started the car to cool it off, just in time to hear Screeeeeeeeeeeeeech.... How embarrasing is that? ![]() Hopefuly this fix will be the solution to resolve this annoying problem for all the d owners who have had the "squeel".

Please keep us posted over the next 2 to 3 weeks and if you could post up the details of the part as it is spelled out on your ticket that would be appreciated. Last edited by cssnms; 08-02-2011 at 12:10 PM. |

Chris,
Mine only said "non-oem " belt. Your SA should be able to access the PUMA cases filed for the specifics. |

Has anyone else gotten their compressor replaced other than me & BMW Power? The reason I'm asking because my 2nd set of belts (prior to replace compressor unit ) also got chewed up & it appears the new AC compressor has solved the mystery.

Threads like this are both educational and disconcerting, since I'll be seeing my new 335d exactly one month from today. Best of luck to all who have had the squeal, and here's hoping the rest of us don't get it!
