Stug,

Let us know what you do about it. Either tighten it up or replace it? Yourself or dealer? etc...?

It just started happening to me. 4k miles. It happened once about a month ago and then again yesterday. Sound lasts for about 10-15 seconds then stops. Not consistent enough for me to take it in yet.

I have had the A/C belt replaced for about a month now. Just got back from a 2500 mile road trip thru Colorado and New Mexico. The D's performance was spectacular and not a single squeal. Just FYI, my aftermarket belt was a Goodyear Gatorback. As I reported earlier, a PUMA case has been opened, so by now the issue (and fix) should be widely known.

Getting new rear brakes done as well, not even 17k on them. I thought it was just sensor since pads still look good but I won't argue.
Update:
My was v-belt was not replaced during my appointment. SA indicated that BMW put hold on original BMW supplied belts, and I was told I would be informed when they become available. Yesterday I got email from SA and belt will be replaced tomorrow. SA indicated that BMW issued DCS massage which states not to replace AC compressors since once returned to BMW were not damaged. DCS massage is issued before official SIB is released, looks like they are working on the potential solution.

My car is in for the "squeal service" right now also, and is being held pending availability of the new belt.

Got my car back today. The AC compressor and v-belt were both replaced. The replacement belt was a NAPA part # 25-040325, which cross-references with the Gates and Goodyear belts referenced by others as replacement belts. My SA was not familiar with the problem but they were able to replicate it after letting the car sit out in the sun all day, and I had also previously emailed him the video I captured of the squeal in action. Overall very happy with how it was handled.

But of more concern to me is that in the process of replacing the belt the Tech noticed that the Aux fan/Glow Plug wiring had been incorrectly installed at the factory, and had worn through the wiring harness down to bare copper wires. They opened up another PUMA case, and then replaced the damaged section of the wiring harness and re-routed and secured it.

This noise is getting very annoying now every time I start the car and turn on the AC. It is embarrassing too. I feel like driving a POS car for few seconds. I mentioned it to SA back in April when I took the car for oil change but since they could not replicate it they didn't change the belt. I have now 2 recordings on my iphone from past 2 days. For those who got it replaced... Did all of you had to have the dealer replicate the noise in order to change the belt?? I see that GB's car was sitting in the sun and they managed to recreate it.

Yes, this is a strange on for sure. It is not consistently present and just comes once in a while. I can't predict when it will do it or not.

I've heard it maybe 3 times in the past 3 months, so it is hard to really bitch about it. Definitely not right.

If all of us that experience it complain, we should get their attention.

Unless it comes more frequnetly I won't complain until next scheduled service sometime next year.

Same here. I heard it twice this weekend, but have not heard it for two weeks since then. Only lasts for a couple seconds and then goes away. Happens after sitting in garage or sun.....very inconsistent.

BTW guys...is there a SIB out on this yet or is BMW doing this on a case by case basis? This is obviously an issue with 2011 models. Like Flyingman....not happening enough for me to take it in for just this. Thinking I ll have them check it out when I do my oil change around 6k miles.

Mine became a daily occurrence at the end of hot Sacramento summer days - took it in to the dealer, who could finally reproduce it after I gave them exact steps (leave car in sun for most of the day;-), unlike during the 1st service when it was still intermittent, but they only cleaned the belt, which helped for maybe a week, but it's starting to squeal again...so need to schedule another trip to the dealer, hopefully 3rd time lucky.

Mine occurred both after sitting in garage overnight and occasionally when sitting in the sun during the day. So it is a little baffling as to what environmental conditions trigger the squeal, but eventually my car was squealing longer and more often by the time I brought it in. If you can capture a video clip of it in action, I'm sure that would help when dealing with the SA. It took me a couple of weeks to get a recording...kinda felt like I was stalking "Nessy" after awhile!

And I don't believe there is a SIB, or at least one was not referenced on my work order. I delicately mentioned to my SA that others have had repairs done by opening up a PUMA case with BMWNA, which is what they ended up doing.

Was able to get a quick screech out of mine this afternoon. Car sat in the hot sun for about 2 hours, as soon as I started it up the A/C compressor kicks in and the screeching started for about 2-3 seconds, then went away.

Again, I'll hold off till next scheduled service or it really becomes a nuisance.

Picked up the car today and dealer replaced the A/C belt with upgraded OEM belt, part # 64-55-7-793-608. I did mention using non OEM and he said they are aware of the issue and replacing the belts with newer version.

I was lucky that it made the noise when they brought it inside the bay. I had my videos just in case. The SA told me that the old belt was coming apart and frayed.

I am not sure if one would get stranded and have to call for tow truck in case of a snapped A/C belt but if you have this noise get it check out sooner than later.

These cars don't use just a single belt for everything?

This seems to be the same P/N it has always been. Real OEM is not showing this as any new part.

Here is my squealing noise

Mine happens only when car has not been used for a day or too. Really annoying and embarassing (ha ha, you drive a BMW and sounds like a POS car...) Sent it to the shop to see what it is, hope that is just a belt, because it is what it sounds to me like. I´ll post back when it comes back. Sorry for the low quality, but the sound is evident.

Sancho, you need to get that fan belt tightened!

Glad to see a Tico in the group, but when are you going to get a 330d?

I am suspecting this has something to do with one of the belts. If it was a problem with the starter, guess I would hear more of a grind than a squeal...really hope this has to do with a simple belt

As for the other part, too late...this one is going soon, going to Stuttgart instead. Ten years ago me saying this would be a blasphemy, but I have been kind of dissapointed when going from a 2001 525i (E39) to this E90: very basic, kind of harsh, and more sporty than elegant. Guess it is something that comes with age, for me it is like having a very nice suit, shirt, tie, pants and socks, but having them paired with a very good pair of expensive, ergonomic and light sport shoes

The other day I had a meeting and at the end I carried an older gentleman, about 75, to his hotel, since he was coming from abroad and traveled in taxis. His hotel was about 5 kilometers from the meeting site, and I noticed he was making some slight pain expressions while on the road. I asked him what was wrong, and he said that he had back pain problems, and had not taken his daily medication. So he was feeling every small bump through the RFT´s and the suspension. At the end I told him sorry for the bumpy ride, and he replied "thank you for taking me to my hotel, but I knew this would be a bumpy ride. I love the 3 series, but I wouldn´t purchase it, since my back would be trashed in two months"...that was funny.

So I am leaving the ranks and going here.

My last Mercedes experience was with a 1986 300 SE, back in the 90´s, so I tested a C class and it is simply awesome, feels very well equipped in comparison to our E90´s...the worst that could happen could be that I don´t like it and later return to BMW, we´ll see...but I feel that the 3 series would be the perfect car for a 30-35 person who doesn´t really care about the harsh ride and sparse equipment...although BMW´s handling can´t be touched. But as I said, maybe it is something that comes with age

Hope that frikkin´pig squeal is not something serious. Best regards!

I agree with Sanchorb, the 335d is quite harsh, especially with RFT and sport suspension. Switching to 17" non RFT helped a lot, but the ride can't compare with my E39 540i, which has a very plush, well controlled ride. However, the handling on the E90 is top drawer. Always a trade off!
