I recommend changing the diff oil every 80'000 miles as it has a very hard life but you must make sure that you use the correct oil, in the uk i use castrol oil which i buy from a specialist oil supplier, jack up the rear of your car and drain the oil out when it is hot, caution undo the filler plug first so that the oil runs out smoothly and then refill, i recomend that you replace both of the plug washers.

I changed mine with factory fluid from the dealer. If I'm remembering right, it only cost me about $35 since it took just a little more than a quart.

I still have some of the factory stuff left over, and it is as thin as tranny fluid. Not sure if this helps.

trans fluid in a 740 hu? funny cause every one I ve changed I use BMW hydrolic oil, and if your in there, change the trans oil filter as well, and youll need to order a new gasket, they are paper so you have to, if you have never changed an oil pan, and if you dont know how to properly fill, dont try it, you will make your tranny slip...

forgot what I was getting to, use a good synthetic oil, dont go cheap, it doesnt take alot so there is no reason to go cheap.
