Metallic vs. Non-Metallic Paints

Are BMW's Metallic paints any stronger than their Non-Metallic paints?

Aside from the flake mixed in, is the paint process any different?

Any additional coats used?

Thanks.

I can't say for sure, but it's been said here that black sapphire is a tougher paint than jet black. I think it has something to do with the clearcoat on the jet black bring softer.

Argh; just saw Jet Black and Black Sapphire side by side, Jet Black being nicer!

Haha. I know. I just bought a jet black 750. You can get lost in that color it's so deep. I told the wife she's not allowed to wash it.

Thanks. 2011 Jet Black on black M Sport with Cold Weather, Ash Trim, Comfort, Luxury seating front and rear. First car I've seen with the Lux seats in back. I'm working on the pics. The only person that's ever going to ride in the backseat is my 10 year old daughter. She's very appreciative of the room and adjustable massage seats, haha. I wanted black on saddle, but I've been looking since May and haven't found one set up like we wanted. This one was local to me with a killer price and only 11,000 miles. Couldn't resist. There's not a mark on it. Still smells new.

Anyone know if BMW Individual paint has any added strength?

If not mistaken, it has an additional layer or two, right?

And is the application process any different?

i have jet black and i think it's a great color. when it's clean it's like looking at yourself in a black mirror and it's easy to get lost in the paint. however, there's just something about metallic paint that i always loved. it's the flakes in the paint. when the sun is hitting the metallic paint the right way man it just looks so amazing. i wouldn't have minded saphire black.

Your Jet Black looks great!

Actually, I feel Jet Black on a 7 is rare, where most are Sapphire Black.

Am I wrong?

My Jet Black looked like **** after a year or so. Softest paint I've ever owned on a car. Personally wouldn't do it again. Mineral White doesn't seem to show any scratches whatsoever, which I guess is the same with Alpine White. Some damn neighborhood cat that always gets into my garage loves to sleep on my car, since I tend to come home late and it likes to lay on the engine heat. Always find paw prints up and down the car, but never notice any scratches. If I still had Jet Black I'm sure that thing would permanently show the choreography of that cat.

Yea, the jet black is a gorgeous color when the car is clean and the paint is still fresh. Yes, it's very soft and sxratche/swirls pretty easily I'D u know how to clean it.

all water based paints used in factories now are much softer than solvent based ones

I am not sure of the BMW's painting process' for both paints but my Jet Black looks amazing when clean. How you wash and maintain it will dictate the long term durability of the paint on your car. Foam gun and good quality cleaning/detailing products is the only way to go.

I only use Adams products on my car. Very expensive, but there's nothing out there like it. It isn't sold in stores tho. I have the car dryer as well, which us nothing short of amazing. No more having to dry by hand. The soap is a special formula on some next level tech that doesn't take off the wax.

And again, with the jet black, it's necessary to go all out when cleaning the car. I don't let anyone touch my car with their dirty rags and crappy products.
