Stereo Upgrade

I am contemplating upgrading my stock stereo system in my 06 E53 4.4i. The current system I have is non-DSP however the sound is not too bad. Here are the choices I am looking at:

1. Local BMW dealer can install I-Pod integration for around $350 (parts and labor). This will not give me the ability to do any satellite.

2. Go to a place like Car Toys and install whole new system with I-Pod, Nav and satellite for around $1200.

Has anyone else gone through this process? Looked up in the search and did not find much on this board. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Hi, nothing yet. My local BMW dealer will put an Ipod adapter in for around $500. I am leaning towards going to a place like Car Toys and replacing the entire system so I can have Sat. Radio as well. The current system is pretty weak and leaves a lot to be desired. I will post some pics when I get it done. Thanks.

1. Will your upgrade improve sound quality?
2. Will it support blue tooth phone calls using my cell phone? Thanks much!!!

Hey ssi19,

I am not sure if the stereo will improve the quality of the overall system. One would hope since I know that the original system is pretty basic. As for the Bluetooth, that is pretty much standard so if your cell phone has Bluetooth, it will work with that stereo.

I am starting to lean towards upgrading the entire system, stereo and speakers. Will run me around $1800 however the car is paid for free and clear, in great shape and has low mileage. This is my third BMW and I am very impressed with this X5 and plan on keeping it for some time. I will probably look at having Car Toys or another stereo shop do all of the work.

Take care and have a nice weekend.

Before you do anything have a look at a Dynavin system, integrated right in, has facilities for amps and subs, has bluetooth and nav and plug and play for steering wheel control. Cost is around 7-800 US.

Looks good however it does not seem to have any support for Satellite radio. Did I miss something?

I believe it's got an aux input in the back. But you'd still need the physical radio. I know what you mean, I'm addicted to Sirius, but this way at least you're not running through an FM modulator.

I actually bought that same unit. Went to install it and there were no instructions...none. I attempted it anyway as I've done loads of head units in cars, and really it's an exact fit right? Short story long, I took it to an installer, they took 3 hours after I had pre-wired the back up camera, I pod integration, aux line for my Sirius. The unit works well, you will get no support what so ever from these guys, my 03 had to have all the plastic support behind the original head unit cut out to make room for the exact fit. There is a buzz in the aux that can be fixed by getting a Kensington noise suppression line for the aux port.

All in all it is worth exactly what you pay forit, not a penny more, and once installed looks good in the dash.
