Unhappy 2004 530i, iDrive screen blank, no radio

Here's what happened. Started up the car and the system started it's boot sequence. Got to the BMW screen and it rebooted itself. Did this a couple more times and then the screen remained blank. Control knob is now free spinning. I can hear the NAV DVD spinning on start up and then I hear it now and then, so it is getting power. I checked the fuse in the trunk - good. Checked the spare tire well - dry. Looked inside the white control box under the spare tire - clean. Pulled the CD/DVD/Radio unit from the dash and checked the connections and 20A fuse - all good and tight. I tried the 3-finger reboot - nothing. I can't get the discs to eject. Otherwise, the car is driving fine.

Anyone have any insight? I'm wondering if a failed DVD or CD drive could be mucking up the system - M-ASK or such. I'm a DIYer - rebuilt motors, transmissions, etc, so I'm not afraid to tear into anything if someone has any ideas. I dread having to take this into the dealer to get bent over for an analysis.

I have access to AllDataPro and looked throught the wiring diagrams, but I need some help with troubleshooting before I buy any replacement parts or dread, take it to the dealer.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Well, it's been about a week now that it's been dead, so I don't think it's going to come back. I originally thought it was a loose connection, but none were loose. BMW does do a good job on the connection interlocks - they're not coming loose on their own. Does anyone know a secret to forcing the CD and DVD to eject? I'm also getting the orange lights on the buttons and I can hear the DVD drive spinning intermittently, so I know it's getting power.

Try pushing the volume button and the eject button for the CD and DVD all together at the same time. This is how I get my idrive to reset on the rare occasion that it freezes up on me.

Took the car to an independent mechanic with a friend at a BMW shop and they diagnosed that the CCC needs to be replaced. I'm still not convinced, so I pulled the unit this past weekend.

Per AllData, here's what they say is one procedure to remove the CD and/or DVD:

PROCEDURE
[NEW] Use the following procedure to try and remove the disc from the drive:

1. Turn the ignition on.

2. Press the rotary knob along with both drive eject buttons simultaneously.

3. Release the buttons. This will initiate a CCC reset.

4. Once the CCC starts to reset, press the eject buttons repeatedly to eject the discs.

5. If necessary, try this procedure several times.

I ended up disassembling the system and manually removed them (found this info after the fact.)

I'm planning on putting the system back in the car today to see if it miraculously fixes itself.

Sorry about the bad news. I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. CCC was bad and had to be replaced. The Indy Shop used the Autologic Computer to update the software via connecting the fiber optic cable to the glove compartment's connector; took about 5-6 hours for update! "While" doing it, be sure to copy the old code (FSC?) to enable voice command feature!

Supposedly, the shop bought the CCC from the dealer for $850. They charged me $315 to install CCC, IBS, battery negative cable and a new battery. In your case, I hope it's just the CCC or something less expensive. Also check the MPM (?)under the spare tire to make sure it is not burnt!

Good luck!

E60 iDRIVE CCC BLANK SCREEN ISSUE

Amazing there are not more posts on this common problem in last couple years. Surely more units have failed, as mine just did on 2005 545I with 140K. It started to go off, come back on for about three weeks, then finally gave it up and it has been blank and nothing related is working now for past two weeks. Will check for the usual problem areas mentioned, but what about replacing unit, is it always the same CCC issue, or is it a program update problem. I don't want to spend $150. for update only to be told by stealer that CCC is bad. Any added opinions in last few years?

Thanks,

2004 BMW 530i iDrive failure

Hello dear BMW users
Visited dealer for a computer check paid $80 then they told me I need to replace the whole system unit including CID screen. Also the tech said the wires tested ok.
I recently found out a lot of thinks about my 2004 BMW 530i
The actual problem in CCC unit it self and why it's not working properly the CID unit (control information display) is not showing the data goes from BMW sign to a blank. I've been driving around on turned of CID unit for 4 month then noticed a radio is on more frequently then connected the CID unit screen and it worked for a little bit then the same issue over and over again! Read forums and decided to replace the batter. I did replace for a new battery paid $200
Connected the battery same problem. Had for the last hope by resetting the whole system even tho knowing it will erase my memory seat radio station all little basic things.. I didn't care much anymore so I did it!
Waited for a min or 2 then started the car same problem occurred i kept the car running and in 2 - 5 min it worked ok I turned it off then on it worked!!!
Finally I thought I resolved that problem. Next day I started the ca it worked until I drove to gas station then started the car and the same problem occurred a flashing screen.. After all my experience I bought CCC unit $400 then programmed $150 and it works fine.
Hopefully it will help all our BMW members.

Also one more thing I found out about new BMW aftermarket touchscreen navigation system you can install those and they work better you can see yourself on YouTube:

Good luck

Thanks,
Follow up. Well, after much research, I found out what problem was. First off, if you don't have NAV, then you don't have a CCC unit, which is the case with mine. Pulled it out and it is a MASK unit for those interested.

OK, checked the wiring diagram, checked voltages and all fuses, and I discovered there was no power to MASK for the cooling fan was not working, nor was there power to CD, so here is where to look for problem, in your trunk under spare tire you will fins a MPM module which evidently shorts out if water gets into your lower spare tire well. Poor design for sure, so it is recommended to relocate these modules to top of foam insert or in side panel compartments, your choice, but get them out of the well.

OK, with that said, mine was not wet, but the MPM did short out for there was no 12VDC coming out of unit, but there was 12VDC going into unit and fuse was fine in trunk, so I replaced MPM and bingo, iDrive came back up and it has been fine ever since. Of course, as I have learned, if you don't have NAV, then you have MASK, and if you have NAV, you have CCC which will not have MPM. It appears CCC is culprit in almost all cases if reprogramming doesn't work.

Good luck,
