Heated Seats

I have problem with my driver side heated seat, I turn it on....the 3 green lights light up... Then after1-2 seconds they turn off. Keep doing this and it does the same thing. It has been a couple of months and I forgot about it. So I thought I would reach out and see if anyone else has the same problem and/ or know how to fix this. Thanks all

Check your battery, if it does not have enough juice, it will shut down your heated seats to save power (does it happen on the passenger side?)

It could be shorted-out. Smell underneath when you turn it on?

I don't smell anything under the seat, all fuses are good. Cold weather is coming and I still have no resolution. Anyone?

Perhaps you should swap the switch from left to right to determine if that is your problem? I am not sure if there is a relay involved in this, but if it were a fuse you would think it would not work at all.

There have been folks who had heated seat failures in the opposite direction...the seats would overheat and burn the leather, and possibly them. So this indicates that each seat has some type of control unit somewhere. I just don't know where. There are some on here that have the Electrical Diagrams and might be able to advise you.

Good luck in keeping your rear warm!

Thanks again for the reply, I will give it a shot, maybe there is a plug under the seat that came loose or disconnected but then again when I had my z4 I took the seats out to have the carpets cleaned I had a dash light that came on. I will dig further into this and update. Thanks again

Took a look at the WDS (BMW wiring diagrams) and here is an excerpt from the seat heating description:

Fault monitoring

The electronic seat heating control system monitors the temperature sensor and heating mats for faults. Detected faults are stored in the fault code memory of the centre console switch centre.

The following faults can be recognized:

Short-circuit or line break
Short-circuit or line break of temperature sensors
Break in heating mats

If a break or short occurs at the temperature sensor, the seat heating is switched off in order to prevent overheating. The function LEDs are switched off.

All other faults described in the full document mention the button LEDs remain on during the fault, so it appears you have short or break in the temp sensor.

The error can probably be read if you do a scan of error codes. The codes might help pinpoint the problem.

The reason it's your driver seat that's acting up is because its the most used seat.

Heated seat problem

Hi just thought i would add to this, i have recently purchased 6301 sport privately, great car with full history. however after a few months of ownership i noticed that on the back of the driver seat seamed to heat, as this was warm enought i did not think musch about it, until a few days ago a burnt hole has appeared on the bolster edge of the base seat ( see pic ) couple of questions.

1 does the base work independly to the seat back
2. how difficult is this to replace ?
3. Any one seen this before

Search the forum - this seems to be a known problem and in the US at least, members say that BMW is so concerned about the liability they pay for the repair even if the car is out of warranty. I have no personal experience of this (yet).

Hi colink

Thanks for the heads up on the BMW concern. I can see it being a serious Heath issue. Think I will write to BMW uk.

Hi Steven - I emailed BMW HQ in Bracknell last week with the same issue on my 04 645 - small hole burnt in lower right side seat back.
Tried my local dealer who refused to do anything as car is too old.
Sent a pic of damage with my email, not got a reply yet so will give it a couple of days and send a chaser.
If you get any response, post it up!

OK - got a reply back from BMW UK - doesn't look like they are willing to do much

"Thank you for your email dated May 2, 2013. I am sorry to learn that you have encountered an issue with the heated driver’s seat of your BMW 645Ci. I can certainly appreciate your concern, especially as your wife suffered a burn as a result.

I acknowledge that you have located information on the Internet, which has led you to believe that there is an issue with the heating elements used in BMWs. However, I can assure you that this is not the case. BMW collates failure reports and part orders from our network of appointed dealerships around the world, which offer us a much more factual insight in to potential situation such as this. Taking these information sources in to account, I can confirm that there is no evidence to suggest that failure of the driver’s seat heating element is an inherent defect with our vehicles.

I am concerned to note that the Service Technicians at Wood in Hampshire, refused to inspect your vehicle. I would like to reassure you that BMW UK expects our appointed dealerships to diagnose any issue that is presented to them by our customers, irrespective of the vehicle’s service history.

At this juncture, I would recommend that you allow an alternative BMW Approved Dealership to investigate the reason behind this failure. Should the advisors deem it necessary, they can contact BMW UK and request that we assess a claim for financial assistance towards the repair costs. However, please note that as your vehicle has no valid warranty policy in place, you will be liable for the cost of repair.

You can locate the contact details of all appointed dealerships in your local area by visiting www.bmw.co.uk and clicking on the ‘Find a dealer’ locator, situated along the top of the homepage."

So guess i'll get it booked in for an outstanding recall notice, and get them to look at the damage and see what happens!

Heated Seat Issue

Hello all - this is my first post! Just this past weekend I also was burned by the driver's side heated seat of my 2005 645ci convertible. There is a small burn hole on the lower front left side of my seat. Of course the expensive warranty package that I purchased (April 2013) does not cover heated seats. I saw that you emailed BMW so I just did the same thing though I don't expect much help. There is obviously some defect since it has happened to others.

645ci heated seat retrofit

Hi. Im Martin. I am about to fit oem seat heating into my 2004 645ci. Got the switch consol fitted, got the seat heater elements fitted and now struggling with the wiring. I've done days of research on the net but i cant find a solution for my case. As i seen everybody runs wires from under the seat to the switches and then to the fuse panel bla bla... my case is: all of the slots have wires fitted behind the control /switc center unit, when i fitted this unit it was light up without any issue so i think the fuse and the wiring is exist in my car but down under the seat the yellow plug doesnt have the 3 wires fitted for the seat heating connections.. strange. So i just would like to know if there is a module or connection point under the carpet or which colour of wires do i have to extend from the switch unit to this yellow plug. I seen lots of diagrams but i can lost myself in that kind of drawings. Thank you for any help!
