2012 NAV CIC update

My NAV update experience. I updated my 2011 CIC X5 35d, it was using NAV version 2010.

I also tried to buy the 2012 DVD from BMW, they are not stocked any more, no one in the country has them, nor does the dealership know if they will get them. So I downloaded the torrent, and burned 3 DVDs. The DVDs seems to burn fine, but disk 3 would lock up or freeze and spin, i could hear it repeating its cycle in the CD player. So after talking to some people, I started the install over from the USB. You will need 3 separate usb drives. The system asked to insert USB 2 and then 3, similar to the DVDs. Good thing about this was the data from the DVD install was stored on the HD and the re-install from USB1 and USB2 lasted a few minutes, as all it did was confirm that the data was copied over. Then I inserted USB3 and this seemed to take forever, maybe 3 hours. Perhaps it froze like DVD3 did. I eventually shut the car off and the system said update successful and then rebooted.
Map version says 2012, and everything seems to run ok. I know the maps were updated, as my drive to work now shows the new road. It was under construction last year and didn't show up on my old version. The UI doesn't look any different, and I think the perspective 3D maps didn't get copied over.

Does your 2012 updated version of the Nav maps give you the perspective view in 3D option?

In the menu > views > my perspective view in 3D option is grayed out. I'm thinking the 3D maps didn't get copied over during the install, unless I have to pay for some feature i'm not aware of. Can anybody verify that I should have the 3D maps?

2012 NAV CIC update

My 2012 map update done by BMW does retain the 3D perspective feature. The version data shows 11211.2.18 Road Map North America Premium 2012.

I am not inpressed by the update of points of interest: Two restaurants I enjoy were not listed even though they were open about 2 years. One search yielded the prior name and the other had neither the old or current one at the address.

The POI details differ in accuracy from area to area. My data hasn't been updated in a few years, but it is quite accurate. Pretty much any nav has accurate data for Los Angeles, for whatever the reason.

If you have the traffic maps on, 3d will be grayed out. 2012 Maps do have 3D perspective. Turn off traffic maps (but you can leave traffic info on--that's a separate thing).

Thanks for the info. Just to be clear, my 2010 650i only has 1 CD/DVD slot. I do not have the additional dedicated slot for the NAV system. I've been told that it is impossible to do a DVD upgrade without the dedicated slot.

Just wanted to make sure that I can do this before going down this path. Thanks

These instructions should work for any CIC hard-drive based navigation system. If your system has the newer ('09+) navigation with the hard drive then you should be able to do this. The single slot that you have will take the navi discs one by one and copy the information to the internal hard drive.

EDIT: This thread (and the successes therein) were on the 3-series (E9X) vehicles. Some also had X3s and X5s. I don't know of anyone trying it with a 6-series but I can't imagine it being any different.

2012 disks

I did the upgrade a couple of months ago, and I have no need to hang onto the disks I bought from BMW - if anybody wants them, I think I paid $15 or so. So, throw me my cost, plus a few bucks for shipping and you can have a set of disks instead of trying to burn your own...

drop me an email at yerds@yahoo.com

Bill

Have a 2010 BMW 335i, where can I get this FSC code? Where does the fsc code come into play during the installation?

When you install the first DVD, it prompts you for the FSC Code, like regular computer software does.

For Map Update FSC Code, contact Sergej (sieras5), sieras5 @ inbox.lt.

Just got an email from my dealer that the 2013 DVD is available for pre 2009 (non HD) models. So I would assume that the later model 2013 map update should follow shortly.

If anyone wants 3 SD cards with the maps loaded on them, shoot me a PM and I'll give them to our shipping department for dispatch. The full upgrade took me about 35 minutes.

I work with Navteq (the mapping provider) closely, so I'll inquire about the 2013 data release date and update if anyone is interested.

The mapping provider for the 2009+ models is TeleAtlas. 2008 and older was Navteq.

i just got off the phone with the dealer and apparently for the 2013 maps they are offering a usb upgrade. no coding or labor is involved you can buy the usb stick (approx $250) and update on your own. i will have p/n and more details shortly.

Tischer BMW (GetBMW Parts) has the CIC USB listed for $189 plus $46 for coding and then $14.95 for shipping and handling. Quite a bit more than last year when you could buy the DVD's for about $15 and then code for about $100.

There is a website in the UK, BMW Navigation, where they will sell you North American CIC DVD's and then the code for about $48, code for $96 and another $8. I'm not sure if he is making his own DVD's but he guarantees them.

Does anyone know if there are BMW DVD's available again this year? So much cheaper.

I will be interested to hear whether this database update corrects the multitude of egregious errors in the previous version.

Not exactly.

The base price is listed as on sale for $189 (down from $245)

Hit the drop-down box, and you will see that:

1) USB + FSC Code via PDF - (CIC - 9/2009 and on) = +$46.00, thus $189.00 + $46.00 =$235.00

2) USB Media Only version without FSC Code is -$146.80, thus $189.00 - $146.80 = $42.20.

That makes the FSC Code cost $192.80, which you can get generated for about 1/4 of that price.

I ordered the USB Media only version, and it came out to $54.10 net after adding $7.95 for Shipping (USPS Flatrate Box Saver) and $3.95 for Handling.

I would much rather preferred the DVD Rom version for only $11.00 like I did last year, but ordering P/N 01990037287, if it is even still a good P/N, is a crap shoot as to what I will actually get.
