Chipped paint on steering wheel - 07

My 2007 X3 has chipped paint on the trim around the buttons on the steering wheel. I have found replacement trim for the M wheel but not this one. Is it available?

If not, has anyone removed this trim to sand/paint it?

The dealer wants $400 for it, which is insane.

I can't really tell from your picture exactly where it's chipped. I have an '07 and had peeling on the standard wheel. I just recently had the trim pieces around the buttons replaced by the dealer. It was done under the original warranty so no charge. If you're beyond warranty, I would think that still should be an item you can order.

I think these are what you're looking for, numbers 3 and 4:

Yes, that's what they replaced, thanks for looking it up.

I can see the chipping now. The part Ishniknork located should work fine, why don't you price out the part alone. I can't believe it's $400 parts and labor, even if you need an indie mechanic to install the part for you.

The stock part on my 2007 was kind of plasticized and the surface was peeling. Might be the same as what you're calling "chipping". The replacement part has a matte finish but doesn't have the plasticized surface, so it won't happen again. It's a little cheaper looking, but should be way more durable.

I had mine replaced 1.5 years ago under warranty. Common problem, unfortunately.

If you still have factory warranty, it is covered.
CPO may cover it for $50 if you have it.

Not something I would replace/repair for $400. Things wear out and become "used" over time. I have a "peeling" on the latch to the dash storage box (where the Nav goes -- if installed) but have no interest in paying anything to fix it.

The car is only 3000mi past the warranty so it was clearly a problem while covered, but the dealer is not helpful. CPO didn't help either.

Bought the parts online for $160. I hope I can install it by just popping them off and on.

So you reported it before your warranty was up? It is covered by the factory warranty for sure. I had 2 pieces replaced due to chipping.

The flat coating did not adhere well. No more issues so far, but if it happens again I will live with it.

I painted mine a week ago, too soon to say but fine for now. I did not sand it, just cleaned it with alchol which removed some of the paint to flaten the scratches.

Thanks for the update.

Mine has started to peel too and I've been thinking about what to do about it.

Mine are starting to peel again too. First set was replaced around 50k under warranty. It's nice to hear his paint is holding up as I am not sure it's worth it buying a new piece. Part numbers below and if realoem prices are close...ouch...
