Mein Auto: depends
What's best for the top? Regular use or 'only when needed'

Is there a consensus among members about how to reduce the likelihood of failure (stipulating that if you never open it it will never break)? The sunroof on my truck broke yesterday and I hate to think how much a failure would cost on an E89. So does regular (say, once a week) but unnecessary operation keep everything in good shape or cause premature wear? Or are the electrics and mechanicals so precarious that they should only be operated when used/driven?

As I want

Speaking only for myself, I operate the top frequently when I'm driving the car in season and park it for the winter on a battery charger. I'm sure it will be costly if I have to replace anythng but BMWs are not cheap to maintain, and what's the fun in a drop top if you're unwilling to put it down?

I put the top down on any trip over 5 miles weather permitting. I'm sure a failure will be costly and therefore have not decided if I am going to purchase after the lease is up. It depends on what the Z5 is like.

I'm keeping mine until I decide it's not worthy to keep it any longer. But since BMW is spoiling the well with the Z5 (rice burner blood), I don't even care to buy another BMW.
