I can't believe how terribly you've been treated by your Extended Warranty company.
Did this ever get this resolved? Quote:

Worth it or no?
I own a 2010 535i xDrive with 30k miles. The warranty ends in July. I've only owned the vehicle for about a year and my driving (18k highway miles a year) is much different than the first owner. I've been quoted $5,000 for a 3 year extension to 100k miles for Platinum coverage. (I figure I'll be at 35k miles when the original warranty ends, 90k miles 3 years later).
I plan on driving the car for about 4 more years, so a year past even the extended warranty. My gut tells me I'm better off investing the $5k and stashing that to pay for repairs if and when they come up, but as this is my first BMW, I'm curious what you more experienced folks think. Has anyone seen a better price? Or a reliable non-BMW option? Or would you go with a lower coverage level (i.e. Gold)? Thanks in advance all.. |

Extended Warranty is like a Casino
Quote:
Watch out for Exclusions, and pay explicit attention to those components explicitly covered. Look through the forums to find out what components are failing, and make sure - if you pay for a warranty up front - that those items (at the very least) are covered. My general experience is that you are MUCH better off investing and/or accruing a "Repair Budget" amount than you are by buying an extended warranty. Extended warranties are like casinos: in the aggregate, The HOUSE ALWAYS WINS. If you're a gambler, then it's OK to hope that you are one of the few winners. However, the odds are not in your favor. |

Extended warranty companies are notorious for shoddy treatment, claim denial, etc. That being said, I think there are a couple that are reputable, you can find their names easily on internet sites that review auto warranty companies. You can also easily find the names of the bad ones. Personally I think there is some benefit to buying from BMW if you are going to buy at all, because you can go to any dealer for service and you know BMW will stand behind it (and they charge enough not to find it necessary to deny every claim).
As for Penske, I can't comment on their extended warranty sales (we declined when we bought our Acura) but I have no complaints about the dealership sales or service. I would not tar the entire operaiton just because of one bad experience, though I do think it is more fuel for the fire on why extended warranties may not be the best investment, absent evidence that your car is a lemon. Remember you can always buy one when you hit 49k miles, by which point you'll know.

Thanks for some of the replies. Here's the thing - Pacific BMW gave a $5000 quote for the highest level of BMW coverage (the most years, miles, parts available - the Platinum package). This seems like an awful lot of money for 3 additional years, but considering the complexity of the car, particularly around electrical / iDrive, maybe not. I have the cash in hand, I'm just debating if this is a good choice or not (and this is specifically for the BMW warranty, not a third party). I get the "house wins" concept, but BMW is paying for parts and labor at cost, so just because you or I pay $6000 in repairs, it may cost BMW $4500, so there is a little extra spread involved for the house, right?. I'm leaning towards not buying a warranty and keeping the cash reserve, but looking for counterpoints..

If you talked to Daniel Dutton at Pacific BMW, our Bimmerfest pricing is simple.... $300 over true dealer cost for all forum members. The warranties are pricey simple as that.
