Its such a subtle difference, but a great mod. I dont know why people just jump on this! Being honest, I love the F1 sound, but wish it was more prominent. In contact with Eisenmann reps in Canada. Still contemplating whether to bite the bullet or not and but the system....

Upload the video on YouTube then post a link to the video here.

I like it but I wish it was 3x louder when I floor it. I've been ripping on the car to hear the new exhaust note but I only clearly hear it in underground garages or underpasses.

Why s everyone using x pipe instead of straight?

i try straight
if you do straight pipe there is now power on low end and lot's lot's of gas and no back pressure that's why you need to have x pipe

Benefits of an x-pipe:
1) reduces rasp 2) slightly quieter exhaust than straight pipe (noise cancellation) 3) equalizes pressures on each bank of cylinders 4) the biggie: causes a plunging/scavenging effect. The scavenging results from the initial "pulse" of gases coming down one header then hitting the X joint. Now the gases have two pipes to travel down. This increases the speed of the gases. At the same time the other header will now experience lower pressure which causes the plunging effect (like a vacuum) and this sucks out the gases when the other bank of cylinders fire. This makes a big difference at higher RPMs. Moving the x-pipe to the rear is better for power but installing up near the headers sounds better. I went for the better sound option.

Twin resonator removeal
I am really grateful to this thread for providing support and help for exhaust modifications. As a result of reading this, I had the twin resonators towards the front replaced with straight through piping, and have for the time being left the middle muffler set up and left the stock mufflers. The difference is more burble, slight deeper and meaty sound, and acceleration is noticeably louder but not over the top. Acceleration also seems more free especially on low revs, which is probably due to less back pressure. The exhaust shop said the twin resonators were full of wire wool, which pushed the exhaust into the sides of the resonators and around, which must have caused slowing of the exhaust gases. Exhaust shop BMW expert said that this is now how the car should sound.
So to help with the general information on this thread and to add to the 'database' of sounds, I have uploaded a video of before and after - I have to say though the video does not do a huge amount of justice to the difference, but in real life it is more noticeable. Without the top down, the sound with modest acceleration is nicely louder than stock, and with the top down, much more noticeable, even when just sitting in traffic. Hope this helps. Video link |

Most people have the muffler shop create one from scratch. Check out post #258 and #302 and you will see what a custom x-pipe looks like. Mine is similar to the one in post #258.
You can also buy off the shelf x-pipes from Magnaflow or SuperSprint.

I purchased a MagnaFlow X pipe part #10790 from Summit Racing.
I brought it to the dealership for installation and they sourced it to a muffler shop because they could not do the tube bending. Cost to install was $185.00. |

Hi All
I have read every thread, but please confirm one thing. X pipe at the front gives an F1 sound and at the back gives a deeper sound but you might get droning? And in the USA this sounds like a really cheap option but here in the UK i ask Mstyle for a Resonator delete and they said £400 ($750) |

You will not get drone of any kind by removing the resonators. You will hear only a slight increase in sound when you floor it. There is zero difference in volume when cruising or driving on the highway, even with the top down. The only time I hear the change after the 3 resonator delete is when pulling away from a stop and when I blip for heal-and-toe downshifts. Tunnels and underground parking will give you some very noticeable volume increases but that's it.

I picked up the car this morning from the exhaust shop. I planned to replace the stock mufflers with Magnaflow units but they had only one on hand. As a test, the machanic held several different muffle types to the pipes while I revved and listened. Everything he had in stock muffled too much or was too deep sounding for my taste.
I decided to forgo the mufflers for the time being and try it out. I am taking a 3 week slow cruise from Indiana to Oregon in July and this will give me plenty of time to assess the sound. Initial thought...The sound is awesome, as many of you have heard from first hand experience or through the thread. At times, maybe too loud around the neighborhood, so I have found myself short-shifting to keep the revs down. An added benifit may be lower speeds on the surface roads as I hear the exhaust note just fine. In turn, this should reduce fuel consumption. Not a major concern but a nice benefit. Drone...I hear what may be termed as drone during very light acceleration. At cruising speeds I noticed limited noise, however will need more time to assess as the windows were open the whole time. |

I find it interesting that Indiana James feels the resonator delete to be too loud around residential areas. This is a good example of how subjective sound levels are to each individual driver.
I personally find the 3-resonator delete is still way quieter than say a stock Aston Vantage, Maserati, or any stock v8 muscle car (ie Z06 or Boss 302). To me I would compare the sound volume to a stock 370Z exhaust. So in no way too loud for a residential area. Same goes for drone. Drone does not equal loud. I've heard many droning exhausts and to me drone is a boomy VERY annoying resonating sound you get when the car is under load. In bad cases it's painful on acceleration and grinding on the nerves when you are on the highway. In my books drone is more a mid-low frequency sound that is annoying at both low and high volumes. You cannot hear drone on the outside of the car, it occurs within the car. My M3 has an aftermarket Scorza exhaust that is very loud - I short shift it around my neighborhood - but it does not drone at all.

Hello Yorgi,
I was not clear in my post. I removed the mufflers also. So I now have resonator delete (all 3) and muffler delete. I also may misunderstand the term drone. The sounds were not annoying to me at all. However, I will need more time in the car to confirm. |
