You did a muffler delete? I would never. Resonator and muffler will give an awful sound. Smack a nice pair of mufflers and you will see the difference.

Im so close to jumping the gun on thge magnaflow... but I cant get the Eisenmann out of my head. I may just wait and get what I really want.

Wow straight pipes! I agree that is too much even for people with high tolerance for noise. I've not heard that in person but there are a few YouTube clips with straight pipes and it's over the top loud, and not a good sound either.

Hi Tinoxx,

I got a local UK garage to just cut out the front canisters and weld in stainless steel piping. Cost was 100 for 2 hours labour and the piping. It was an easy job. I much prefer the sound now, and not sure if I will bother changing the mid-muffler for an x-pipe, as the new sound is great for me. If I did, I would actually be tempted to put the x-pipe in the same place as the mid muffler rather than go for a higher pitched sound if placed towards the front of the car.

Post #263 in this thread recommends a good shop in LA (might be a little drive but Stevelee highly recommends this shop and the work seemed very cheap).
Here's the post - http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...&postcount=263
and here's the info:

I got my work done there too, little exhaust shop, but Alex knows what he's doing. I'm planning on eventually going back to delete the back resonator & maybe swap out the mufflers. Front resonator delete for me cost $45.

Well, add my name to the list of six owners who are happy with the resonator delete. I had the shop remove all three resonators and replace with an X-pipe. Total cost for x-pipe and labor was $160. Very happy with it b/c I wanted to let her breathe a little, allowing a little faster rev's and a little more sound at WOT, but didn't want to get the neighbors riled up.

Highly recommend this much-discussed mod to any six owner.

First , thanks for the thread! I was up till 3 am reading .

Greg, do you have a clip you can post? I am in Asheville and found a shop to do the x pipe and all three resonators for 150$ . Great shop that has done work on my infiniti. Going to have it done to my 2008 650i CPE Monday.

Love to hear your baby.

This thread is killing me. I am normally a "leave it stock" kind of guy. But, I desparately want a throatier rumble from my 650 and even stopped in at a custom exhaust place to get a quote on the resonator delete/x-pipe install. For some reason, though, I have been too wary to pull the trigger. I'm not looking for anything over the top, but a nice subtle boost to the volume and bass tenor of the exhaust note. I have seen all of the positive reviews to the resonator delete/x-pipe install on this thread, but have to admit that I haven't been a huge fan of all the sound clips. What I don't want is for the result to sound out of place with a 650 by being either too loud when accelarating, too raspy, too loud at normal cruising speeds, etc.

How do I get past my hesitancy and pull the trigger?

Believe me when I say you will not notice a difference from the stock exhaust note unless you put the pedal to the metal.

There is no drone what so ever. On a cold start (first of the day) I get a nice growl and when driving through underpasses I always do a rev matching downshift blip (manual transmission) just so I can hear the exhaust.

Otherwise the only time you really hear the update is in underground parking garages.

The all 3 resonator delete is a very very very subtle mod sound-wise.

+1 - completely agree - very subtle. I have a white-collar job with a conservative company, and I wouldn't have done the mod if it wasn't subtle.

Here's a short video clip shot by my teenage daughter - shows the quick rev's and slightly louder volume when revving. During regular driving, volume increase is less than 10% and not noticeable.

When I had mine done, they cut everything out as one piece, so if I ever sell and want to go back to stock it will be four simple welds at less than $100 in cost. So, if you don't like, it's real easy and cheap to put it back.

Had it completed, took about 20 minutes. All came out with 4 cuts and it is one solid approx 4' piece. As for the sound, very suttle, barely can tell it was done. I have heard the videos here with the same mod, and mine for some reason is very quiet. Had 3 resonators removed and xpipe.

Next will probably to change out exhaust. Hope this helps

So, I bit the bullet and had the resonators deleted and an x-pipe installed today. I hesitated for quite a while to get this done out of fear that it might be too much and that I wouldn't like the sound. Others have used the word "subtle" to describe the exhaust note that results from this modification. I agree completely. The car sounds as if it is reving faster. The pitch of the exhaust note is somewhat higher - (if I were describing a the sound of a guitar, I would say that the mids increased more than the bass tones); and the volume increase is just enough to be noticable without being over the top. At normal speeds, the difference is very minor. Punch the throttle, however, and the sound is great.

Thanks to those who helped push me over the edge to get this done.

I would like to pop my head up and say hi. I bought my 650i on Monday, and thanks to this thread, I had the desire and confidence to delete the resonators this morning.
After $200 (AUS) and an hour's wait, I am now driving a super smooth coupe that changes into a barking animal when provoked. Awesome modification - thanks everyone for providing all the info you have in this thread.
In order to give something back, here is a short video of my car post-resonators. Hopefully anyone sitting on the fence will benefit.

With something as simple, inexpensive, and reversible as this mod, it was a very easy decision to make.
Tomorrow I will be hardwiring my radar detector through the sunroof/lights/mirror cluster.
And I have replacement badges - black and white carbon fibre - that are on their way. I am not convinced that these aren't a step too far, but I will assess them when they arrive. I have a Brilliant White Individual, and ideally I would like nothing external (other than tail lights) that isn't black or white, and I think these badges might finish it off nicely.
After that, all my mods are done - I am happier every day with my decision to get a 650i.

Link to carbon badges, if anyone is interested:
