just for the record, state laws govern what you can and can't do to your motor vehicle.

several states say that you cannot remove any portion of the pollution control system.

make sure you check your local laws and regulations, especially if you have mandatory inspections. if your state doesn't have inspections you just have to find a way not to piss off an officer enough to necessitate him getting on all fours to check the under carriage.

In Texas a car must have mufflers in order to pass state inspection. However the resonators can go.

So, you'll be the guinea pig to remove the three resonators and post a clip then, right? Then we can all base our decisions on the clips and reviews.

Actually, they want $350 to do it. I can get the Magna FLow for $900. I'm debating which way to go.

Wow, go to a different shop that shouldn't be more than $200 or so to remove the three resonators an fabricate an x-pipe; also keep in mind labor cost to install an aftermarket system is $150 or so

+1. Go to another shop! My guy who is no cheap muffler shop, only works on high end hot rods and sports cars is removing all resonators next week and making his own x pipe - tear out and install $200 out the door. I will post a sound bite once complete. Scheduled for next Friday when I get back in town

my shop said they cant take the OEM tips off and put them back on because they would be too short.

he recommended going with a 9" tip so that way it wouldn't be immediately obvious that that it does have mufflers.

and a "nice" Christmas card to your mechanic should get you around any inspection issues you might have. wink wink

look back at this thread at post #30. Maybe show your muffler shop. EUROWNED just had it done. Your shop sounds like they just want to sell you tips

We don't have inspections, in my state so I'm clear in that aspect.
But, if he is cutting the pipe himself; he can cut so the metal and weld the tips so they still look oem

yeah I kind of got that feeling because I saw his eyes light up when he saw my car ($ $) and all his prices went up by 20%.

that's something I like to call the the Bavarian Two Step... if a nice BMW rolls in, knock the price up two steps.

I'm going to try another shop on tuesday, if that doesn't work there is a speed shop 2hrs up the road that can do it for sure.

if you can notice a balance change of less than 1% then you should be a test driver for Ferrari!

After reviewing all the great info here, I decided to replace my 2010 650i coupe stock mufflers, which is too quiet, with meganaflow mufflers and tips. I think this mod will produce just enough sound for me. Called the dealer and was told that the BMW performance exhaust is not available for 650 and muffler delete may be illegal and void warranty. The dealer asked me to wait till new car warranty expires. But I can't wait for 45 months. I will settle with less db and possilbe less warranty trouble. Bought mufflers and tips from e-bay for around $210. Will install after receiving them.
What is your decision, guys?

Nice, kbarkker. Did you remove the resonators? Will the maganaflow mufflers replacement alone enough? Saw your vid on youtube and you did not mention that your removed the resonators. Thanks.

Kevin,
What was the part number for the mufflers? I can only find the kit numbers.
Thanks.

Taz, 11235 for ss mufflers (14335 for polished), 35159 for tips.
W D Top, dose magnaflow mufflers alone produce louder sound than stock? How much louder? Thx.

Yes but barely and only really any different sound while in sport mode. it is a deep sound sort of muscle car sounding.
