Need to replace the hood struts

My hood does not stay up by it self now, took it to bmw they said i need to replace the hood struts. They wanted alot of $$$$ for this job, I ordered the parts off ebay cost me 60 dollars for both struts and now i just have to install them. Any advice would be helpful, or I might go to an independent mechanic and pay him like 20 dollars to get them installed.

Takes 5 minutes total, just hit the strut with hand where it connects and it releases

Smile Try this

Have a look at rmeuropean.com. I've bought a few parts from them, they answered my
questions and I was surprised at how fast they arrived. They call it a gas presurized spring. Its part number is 51238240596

By the way a few months ago when my hood wouldn't stay open I unhooked each side seperatly to see if there was any spring to them. Only one pushed out when I pushed it in. The other one just stayed where it was if Icompressed it by hand, so I just replaced that one and it's been all good since

I was able to look at and figure it out... you need a tiny flat head screw driver to pull the clip up pretty much.

Only one of my struts appeared to be worn out so I just replaced the driver side hood strut. Ordered the part on Amazon (OEM Stabilus) for $36. Couldn't have been easier to change out. The clips were a bit different than in the video but with a small flathead poped right off. The time to change the strut was shorter than it took me to find my wise grib wrench to keep the hood up.

^ That's exactly why I always have a friend help when I change hood struts, I've caught teh hood with my head a few times due to my grips letting loose of the hinge. As stated everything pretty much "pops" apart. If anyone else is looking to replace their hood struts I have MTC, Stabilus, and genuine BMW available starting at just under 22 dollars.

I used jack stands to hold the hood....be careful and don't scratch your hood!
