Car starts then dies

Within the last month, my car will start and then die before the key is released. It will also quit at idle at times. Most of this happens cold but it has quit then restarted at 40 MPH warm as well. I have replaced the main relay with new. Have cleaned the 2 connectors on the drivers side of the block going to the crank sensors. It has a new fuel pump and relay, new timing belt. When it quits and quickly recovers at 40 the tach does not drop nor do any warning lights turn on. It just quickly jerks then recovers. It does not happen long enough to verify lack of spark or fuel. Will a crank sensor test faulty by ohms if it is intermittant? It does have a strong fuel smell when it finally stays running but that goes away quickly. Any pointers would be welcome. I've been working on cars 40 some years so I'm not one to throw parts at it. This occurs about every 4 to 5 days and the rest of the time this car runs and starts great.

I don't think it's M20 related, why?, because my m50 e30 is doing the same thing, it just started doing it the other day. It was real bad the first day, it shut off the day I went to get money for the borbets. I went up to the bank fine, then on the way home I was slamming gears just having fun and all of a sudden it died on top of the hill next to my house. I sat there for 5 minutes trying to start it, no luck. So I decided to push it about 200 feet til the very top of the hill, as soon as I parked it, it started right up but died. I left it sit for about 3 hours, went back and still wouldn't start. That's when I called fcsteve to come over, bring the borbets and help me fix my goddamn car. Of course as soon as he got here, it fired up fine, ran fine and only stalled once. I still drive it and it rarely dies (although I don't get on it anymore in fear it'll leave me stranded) but at stop lights on idle it died twice, but started right back up with no issues. Steve suggested the fuel pump relay, which I will overnight right now and I will get back to you on that. If you figure out what it is, let me know.

If you want the Cliffs:
Doubt it's an m20 only problem
my m50 e30 does it too
i'm overnighting a new fuel pump relay right now
i'll let you know if I figure it out, and you do the same

EDIT:

Did some searching around, and I found this: http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=95670 It seems it was his power junction block on the passenger side of the engine bay on the firewall. Will have to check that tomorrow!

This e30 is now being parted out. NO body panels are for sale, bumpers/fenders/hood/mirrors/valance or front turn signals. Everything else is up for grabs. Euro grills/cluster are sold, suspension/brakes/LSD/rear tails are already spoken for.

there is a module that bypassed the fuel pump above the kick panel. I had to bypass mine. Just a thought.

Kick panel? drivers side? Are we saying it is powered by the fuel pump relay or it powers the relay.

On board computer relay box, pin 3 and 4. It controls the fuel pump relay. Jump a wire from 3 to 4 and see what happens. It's a relay output so you won't hurt anything. Plus its ignition fed so you can leave the jumper in and no harm no foul.

And ya, above your left foot on the drivers side to the left of the console, assuming you have a left hand drive car.
