2012 535xi - high pitch wining noise when cruising but not accelerating

Hi,

I am new here and hope I can get some help on an issue that seemed weird to me and dealer.

I have a 2012 535xi with 37k miles. It is giving me a high pitch wining noise when cruising but not accelerating. It often happens between 40 - 60mph. To duplicate I normally speed up to 65mph, lift gas pedal, wait for 2 seconds and I can hear this fainting noise. It is not profound but can be clearly heard. Dealer can not find the source of it.

Anyone experienced same problem? Can I please have some advise?

thanks in advance
Ken

Welcome to the forum.

In the case of any noise, a video could never hurt if you can post.

By lift gas pedal you mean you get to 65 mph, slow down, then the noise occurs?

What happens in N or when downshifting ? If when downshifting is more pronounced then Tranny or Differential / drive train somewhere...

I am in the market for a '12 CPO 535xi and test-drove one in mint condition with less than 30K miles on it last week.

I like to think I have better than average hearing and noticed the sound you described (like a faint "whee--ng") when coasting vs. accelerating. Since it was a test-drive on local roads, I never got past 40mph. I mentioned it to the salesman and he did not notice or merely dismissed it as a normal engine noise.

To me, there is a difference in the term "cruising" and "coasting". Cruising means constant pressure on the accelerator, but not actually accelerating. Like cruising at 60mph on a level road. Coasting is foot totally off the throttle. From your description of recreating the noise, you state you are coasting, not cruising. I'm saying this because, like someone else said, it is probably somewhere in the drivetrain other than the engine. Try shutting off the engine at 65 mph (in a safe place of course) and see if the noise still occurs. Years ago a technician did this in one of my cars to determine if the noise was not related to the engine, or other engine-driven accessory (AC compressor, generator, pumps, etc).

Don't rule out tire noise - even a slight wear pattern of otherwise decent condition tires - can cause the noise you describe. Alternatively, the usual suspects include wheel bearings, the bearings of rotating parts under-hood (alternator etc), wind noise (usually sounds different than mechanical stuff). All can be difficult to track down - Good luck; my F10 with 25K miles is still very quiet at road speeds.

Sounds like it could be your turbos. High hiss sound. Could have a bad one.

What you describe, sounds exactly like what I experience on my 535d when I unload the drive-train from 60 mph, with the high pitched whine continuing down to 50. I believe the problem is a pinion gear that is out of adjustment in the differential. Actually, the 3 series had a rash of differential problems a few years back, but that doesn't seem to be the case with the F10. It's not something bothersome around town, but on long trips over rolling hills, the whine can be annoying as the drive-shaft unloads during decent.
