Car randomly shutting off on me
Hey guys, I've tried searched Google these forums and R3V but I can't find anyone that knows a definite answer for this problem. Recently while driving my car will just randomly turn off, it doesn't stutter at all and the check engine light doesn't come on leading me to believe it's not the fuel pump. I also have to wait like 10-15 seconds before I turn the car back on because if I do not wait then the engine wont turn over. Does anyone know what I should start with replacing? I think it may be the battery due to the fact that it is 7 years old...
Thanks! |

Not the battery, mine is brand new and I have the same exact issue.

It is not your battery.... the only thing your battery does is start your car. The alternator runs the electronics in the car while it is running.

crank sensor might be a good place to start...

If it was the crank sensor wouldn't the car have problems starting all the time?

no...you could drive 2 or 100 miles between episodes. a bad connection or wire can cause you a shut down. mine was weeks apart at first. wait 5 minutes...crank and drive. then i could only get a mile or less down the road. wait, crank and drive. it would idle in the driveway for half an hour, but start down the road...out again. the shiething just above the sensor is bad to crack and the wires break and make intermittant contact. all i am saying is...if you have never changed it, do it and save yourself a tow bill in the future...

Well I looked through the service history of the car and found that the idle control valve has been replaced three times (One just 2 months ago), so I assume that isn't the problem. I should note as well that this problem only happens when i'm coming to a stop. I'll look into replacing the crank sensor tomorrow and if that fixes the problem i'll post a follow up and tell you guys. Thanks for all your help so far.

When my crank position sensor was grounding out, it caused all sorts of strange problems. If you have recently changed the timing belt you may have inadvertently bumped the sensor. Seriously that thing is where electric gremlins are born.

It's light, simple design is rugged enough to run against $400k rally cars, but on the street it' communicative chassis delights even the most disinterested driver. It really is one of the world's ultimate driving machines |

We did just do the timing belt so maybe the sensor was bumped. I'll look into it.

Well it seems like I fixed the problem. It turns out that the air intake tube wasn't fully attached and when I put it on the problem ceased to exist and the idle even improved slightly. So anyone with the same problem should check this tube first!
Thanks for the input guys! |
