2011 X3 turbo. shifting and humming issues

Just got new X3 turbo two months ago. After a month the car shifts very hard into each gear when accelerating. Then when you slow down you feel it downshifting, engine revs and then has pronounced humming noise. Anyone else having this problem. Dealer said no one else has complained.

I would say in general it isn't the worlds smoothest shifting vehicle, but it is not herky jerky either. It wants to get up and go for sure. No humming noises either. Sounds like yours is doing something a little off.....

About the same miles/kms here, and it shifts quickly and smoothly going up and down. Zero problem.

I would have the dealership check out the rough shifting as I don't think it is normal.

I have about 400 miles on my .35 M sport....No shifting issues. Very smooth shifting throughout.
The only thing is that it takes some getting used to from a dead stop. It can be jerky if your thromping on it , then let up ect. I think it's me( operator error) lol
So far, happy as a clam.

OMG! I have a 2011 X3 35i with 3000 miles. I am having horrible problems with the transmission (?). Very jerky when in low speeds, but even worse, I have an intermittent issue of the car redlining and not shifting up!! The car is floored and only going 40mph, and rpm's @ 7!!! The dealer kept the car for a week, and told me there was nothing wrong with it. Luckily my daughter was with me when it happened again tonight, and took video with her ipod!

Can you post the video? That's crazy! When did it start acting up? Hope they figure it out for you!

"There is nothing wrong"; "They all do that"; "We have never seen that before" -- somehow those seem familiar when SA's are discussing transmission problems in the X3.

I wonder if it could be the fuel pump. The 335s were recalled because of faulty fuel pumps. I was told that any BMW with a turbo engine could have this same issue. We had two 335s one 2008 and one 2009 that were recalled because of the fuel pump. A faulty fuel pump can cause vibration, stalling and acceleration problems. I have a X3 turbo with about 1500 miles and once I had an acceleration issue when I was turning left at a traffic light. Maybe you should ask them to check your fuel pump.

I had this problem for the first time about 3 weeks ago. Only had the car for 6 weeks!! I will try to post the video...if I cant get it transferred I will take more video next time it happens. What is your acceleration like? If you floor your 35i how many seconds does it take you to get to 50mph?

Whatever you do start documenting this immediately and notify your dealer/SA.

This is exactly how the problems with the GM6 AT of the older X3 and the HPFP of the 335 series started.

If they cant fix it in 3-4 tries lemon law it asap. Otherwise you will spend the rest of your ownership slapping yourself.

This may only be 1-10 or 1 -20 vehicles, but it stinks when you are the one.

Acceleration for me has been smooth and FAST. Gets up to 50mph in seconds.

Yeah, usually my x3 gets up and goes fast too, but when I'm having these problems it is very sluggish. The service manager told me yesterday, after reviewing the video of my car only getting to 50 mph in 8 seconds that it was running as designed. I told him no (quite loudly) and told him he was wrong, because this is a 0-60 car in 5 seconds and he told me "that is irrelevant". Pisses me off...I think they are jerking me aroubnd because I'm a woman!!!

Sounds like you need to really stand you ground or try to find another service deparmtent in your area that will take this seriously.

They are just plain jerking you around. Tell them they have three tries to fix it or you are going to lemon law it.

Also, make sure you send this same information to BMWNA Customer Service.

8 seconds 0-50 in that car is unacceptable.

I think so too, but wanted to get someone else's opinion on this. Going on vacation for 2 weeks and told them I would be dropping it by before I left. This will be attempt number 3. One more after this and Im going to be contacting my attorney. Thanks for all of your input. Very sad, because before all of this happened i really loved this car!

Don't forget that time spent in the shop can count towards lemon law as well. In most states it's around 30 days in the shop.

So when you drop it off have them verify when it was finished (fixed).

The 2011 X3 35 has the N55 engine which should of fixed the high pressure fuel pump problem that was on the N54 engine. All .35 engine 2011 models have been changed to the N55 (3 series, 5 series, 7 series, X3 and X5) except for the Z4is, 335is and 1M which use a tuned N54.

Look over in the E90 forum for my discussion/info about this HPFP. I believe that the 8 speed gear box is not unique X3, as the X5 and X6 have this. Unless its a electronics issue with the DHP?
