Trade Decision

I'm buying a larger, new SUV tomorrow to accommodate our expanding family and am struggling with the decision to either trade in my 2005 X3 (85,000 miles) or 2006 Nissan Altima (30,000 miles). Both have the same trade in value. Need to weigh the safer vehicle and higher maintenance cost (X3) vs. fewer miles, front-wheel drive, no ABS and cheaper mainteance with the Nissan. I've never had any significant issues with my X3 and am leaning toward keeping it. Would only drive either car approx. 3,000 miles per year (primarily used to drive to commuter train and back each day) Any advice?

Thanks.....I really love my X3, but the only concern is the high mileage and high mainteance/repair costs. Was primarily just looking for some validation on my decision to keep it (not surprised to get it on this board) and to get some feedback on the potential costs to expect when the X3 reaches 85,000+ miles.

Phil, if thats all you are really using the car for then the Nissan makes the most sense to keep for me. The X3 is getting up there toward the big trade in drop (100K miles) in value and approaching the high maintentance cost area. There are lots of things that can go wrong up in this range that cost big bucks. There is a reason that they are worth the same even through the X3 is just a year older but cost twice as much new. The Nissan will do just fine as an economical commuter car and you can save the pennies you would have spent on the X3 to get a 911 next time! Good luck!

I would keep the Nissan for the reasons above. It's only a commuter car with low mileage and dependibility on this car is (I assume) very important.

I am struggling with a similar decision. We have an 04 X3. She has 132,500 on the odometer. I've owned her since new. Runs great, feels new, however, I've been agonizing over replacing her for an F25. I also have an 02 pathfinder with 112,000 on it. I am not sure which to keep. I do my own maintenance (brakes, oil changes, etc), so maintenance isn't a huge deal. My fear is a failing sunroof or tranny in the X3. If one of those go, then I'll kick myself that I didn't dump the rig sooner. However, 1/2 of me wants to keep her until she's worn out at 200k. We are a two driver household and carpool 1/2 the week in the X3.

Thoughts? Advice?

Well you have crossed the Rubicon with each of the vehicles (100K miles) so any sale or trade will be toward the low end. If you do your own wrenching, keep the sunroof on the X3 closed, and drive easily it will probably make it to 200K miles. Then you can donate it to a home for unwed cats or something. The Pathfinder (like the Four Runner) has a hard core following that will probably keep the value up. They seem to value condition rather than mileage. If it looks like new you will probably get a decent price for it from a Nissan 4 wheeler head. Personally I would keep the Pathfinder because it is cheaper to repair, easier to work on, and there are lots of parts out there in the dismantler yards. I happen to like Pathfinders.

I say keep the Pathfinder. Just bought the 35i X3 and we also have an '01 Pathfinder that just turned 100,000 miles. Other than regular maintenance, it has had zero issues. We plan on running it until it dies. It has held its value well too.

thanks, that validates my leaning towards keeping the pathy. However, what do y'all think about the 04 X3? Keep it and drive it a few more years, or pull the trigger and dump it for an '11 X3? I am guessing it'll never go below 5k in trade-in value, so each year I drive it may be a bonus? About 5 months ago, I was offered 9,500 as a trade-in value. I was going to press hard for 10k, but I am probably way too optimistic. Edmunds claims she's still worth 10k based on her shape and option set. Maybe I shouldn't have passed over the Rubicon, but it's been one hell of a ride!!!

Well, I am guessing here but probably both vehicles are paid for, so the only expense (aside from gas/oil) is the insurance and annual state fee. You might want to hang on to the X3 for a bit longer since your assumption is pretty good that it won't drop much in value. Then if you still really want one, you can get an '11 X3 later when all the first year bugs are nicely worked out and the prices drop.

I agree with UncleJ! Since you will be getting another SUV, keep the Nissan; better fuel economy, lower repair costs, etc.

Keep the Nissan. I have had 3 Nissans and all have near zero issues. The thing will rust out before anything.
The BMW after 5 years might have some expensive expenses? I am not a current owner but am looking at the X3.
For you guys I would say if you feel some expensive repairs are upcoming then sell it if the price is reasonable.
When I drive my 93 Pathfinder I don't care how fast it goes, and don't care if someone might ding me.
