DEF flush for X5-35d no longer covered/required?
My 2011 X5-35D is 1 year old, so I just took it in for the oil and DEF change. From what I've read here and elsewhere, they flush and refill the DEF as part of the regular oil maintenance. However, they (BMW of San Francisco) only topped off the DEF. When I asked about the DEF flush, I was told BMW has changed its policy and the DEF is no longer flushed under the BMW covered maintenance program, only topped off. Did I miss the memo, or...?

First time this issue has been discussed here.
![]() Yes, they changed the policy. Truthfully it was a dumb policy to begin with and was not necessary provided you are putting on a decent number of miles per year... |

They don't flush the urea? I'd be pissed.

Their policy changed some time last fall I believe. I got a top-off at my first oil change in November and today at my second oil change I was also told it would be a top-off. There's apparently a bulletin on this but I haven't been able to find it.

DEF Flush process
BMW may have discontinued this process, but DEF residue I find on the filler and bottles left stored between refills tells me that might not be a bad idea (IMO).
Does anyone know if the DEF flush is DIY possible? |

Make sure they actually topped it off... I think my guys were too lazy to pull the intake tube and only topped off the active tank last time, I had to put almost 5 gallons in since my last service
![]() They will be getting specific instructions when I take it in this week. Jay
