88E24Problem

I have a 88' 635csi and when i star the car it idles up and down between 500 and 1000, i bought three idle control valves and those don't seem to be the problem, i unplugged the idle control valve and it idles fine until i put in gear, when i put it in gear it idles up and down between 500 and 1000, it also will try to bog out and you have to catch it at a certain point to press the gas because if you don't the engine will bog out,, and when i put it in gear (like all cars) it goes forward slowly but when it starts idling wrong the car will stop and go, i have no idea what the problem could be, just was looking for some help,, and i was also looking into some clear corner lights if anyone knows where i could get any.

Idle problem

Sounds like your suffering from what is called a "false air".
Basically their is an air leak (leaks) after the AMF (Air Flow Meter).
Easiest plan replace the following hoses: (links for reference)

Intake Bellow & Hose kit

If you can find a Peake scan tool, use it to find out if there are any fault codes stored in the computer by connecting the scan tool to the round 20 pin connector under the hood. It's much better than guessing. Some indy repair shops may also have the capability but you might end up spending more for them to scan it than the cost of the Peake tool. I recently bought one on Craigslist for $75. They're about $140 new.

Scan Tool

The Peak scan tool will not throw a code for "false air".
It may throw a code for "Too Lean"
If you want to test, get a vacuum gauge, a hose T and hose. Connect vacuum gauge inline with fuel pressure regulator.
At idle their should be close to 12 psi (don't have manual with me right now)(please check yours)
If vacuum reading is low, start looking for leaks at the brake booster, interior temp sensor, and charcoal canister, first.
The scan tool is great (I have one), but the things that drive you crazy with BMW's don't always have a code or the code you get is for the symptoms, not the infection.

Carefully spray some carburettor cleaner around the intake area hoses and manifold and if the engine revs up you have an intake air leak so replace any leaking items. These engine are not really problomatical but they still need expert looking after by BMW specialist not jack of all trades garages.

I would doubt if it was simply the icv... I"m guessing you started by checking all the vacuum hoses in the engine compartment, including the ones running to the exhaust manifold
and a short 3-5 inch hose running underneath the big boot hose that goes to the afm, plus the vacuum hose that runs from engine compartment to a gauge attached to the back of your
kick panel below the steering wheel.. there's more but make sure none of those vacuum hoses are cracked..
