That's my recollection as well.

OK...this is a bit ridiculous.

I had an 06 Z4 3.0si and if that is the vehicle in question...good god...this is not even a fair comparison. The M3 is lightyears better in terms of handling limits, balance, confidence etc. And that is after I got rid of a crappy runflats and put on a decent set of summer tires.

If we are talking about the M Roadster, then that is a bit different as that car was a ton of fun to drive in general and was much sharper in terms of handling versus the non-M.

I do not recall Any published review giving the Lexus tops over the M3 in any category maybe other than quiet Interior.
I am a former Lexus owner and loved my GS400 but that was the 98 model considered to be the best sports sedan they built. All cars since that model save the ISF are simply buttery soft.

Actually, a pair of women designers (one for the exterior and the other for the interior) for the e89 (which ironically is less a "chick car" than the predecessors).

FWIW, I think the "new" Z4 was a big step backwards for BMW. It pretty much sucks. But, that is just my $.02 worth.

Yes, the women did a great job designing it. But a sports car it is not.

Yeah, although the E89 Z4's are great cars they just lack the aesthetics in my opinion that the E85's had. Sure it might grow on people like me over time a bit but... For me personally regarding the original post I would go for the M3 vs the Lexus but only because of my passion and desire for the M car history. It will be a win win for you regardless but German cars always had a way of winning me over (Porsche is doing a great job right now). Let us know what you decided in the end and show pictures!

The IS-F doesn't rev to 8400 RPM, nor does it have that glorious engine note of the M3. I also hate the new gauge cluster.

The new coupe is gorgeous. A contender of a car I would pick u if I had the money.

The only problem with the C63 is that it does nothing else well except go like stink... If I am dropping that kind of coin, I want something that can do everything well.

With that said and the options discussed it's M3.
Lesser coin is the Nissan GT R

Thanks everyone...been away from Vegas, on vacation in NYC & Long Island, visiting family and touring New England.

I agree, have ALWAYS loved German cars...
and yes, Porsche is evidently doing a fantastic job, because it is somehow, in 2011, regarded as the MOST "reliable" car made now???
I would get one (911 or Cayman) in a "heartbeat" if it had a backseat like the M3 ( the Panamera does nothing for me...).
I just read that the IS-F, in 2011 , had "caught" the M3 in EVERY way...on the track and off?
And, then reasoned that BMW's reliability has gotten "iffy" as of late...so why NOT Lexus?
Wish BMW had the reliability record of Lexus?
I do prefer the look and sound of the E9x M3 over the IS-F.
But my next purchase has to be "long-term"...or longer than most keep a car, including myself, in the past.
Remember, this would be my second M3...
...and I have high hopes that this car (one and ONLY NA V8 in "M3" history), could one day be a Barrett-Jackson "star'...returning most, if not ALL of the purchase price.
However, I do want to enjoy them, and not have it become a fricken "money pit".

Initial reports say that MB has fixed the 'can't go around a corner' issue. Guess we'll have to wait for a comparo and see.

AMG fixed that issue several years ago. To me, the only significant difference between the C63 AMG and M3 is the transmission.

Manual transmission. Old fashioned stick shift. Slow, but fun.

I am sorry but Audi S4 is not in the same class as an M3. The S4 is more comparable to the 335i or 335is. So comparing S4 gas mileage to M3 is pointless. Now comparing RS5 or RS4 gas mileage to M3 would be more apples to apples comparison.

As far as the IS-F vs M3 issue goes the IS-F prior to 2011 were not as impressive suspension tuning wise. The 2011 IS-F has much improved suspension that puts it near stock M3 level without competition pkg. But then again BMW has not been sitting still either and the competition pkg gives the M3 ever so slight edge in my opinion.

As far as the reliability goes. I have not heard of any serious issues with M3's nor with IS-F. So for me on that front it is pretty even. Other wise this past year both companies over all had taken reliability hits BMW with its HPFP issues and Toyota with its stuck accelerator issues.

Now driving dynamics wise I would take M3 over IS-F. I prefer M3's higher revving V8 vs the IS-F for extra excitement. Also, M3 is a bit lighter then the IS-F and has better weight dist % with less weight hanging over the front wheels. Also, if you want a manual then say good bye to IS-F. I also find the the ability to customize the shift speeds in DCT and edge over fixed shift speeds of IS-F. Also, from most reviews I have seen the M3 steering feel and precision is ranked a bit higher then IS-F.

Last but not least the IS-F styling does not impress me. In fact I think the IS350 actually looks better then the IS-F styling wise. I would take M3 for looks. The interior is a tie in my opinion.

At the end I would say you should drive both cars and then see which one you like better. I know M3 does it for me what IS-F is unable to.

I don't think the M3 would have broken 19. Saving money is a toss up but saving time is really important to me. Not fun to go to the gas station every 200 miles.

I saw an IS-F up close last week. Was talking to the driver at a state park. The CF on the interior was cool and I liked the dials on the instrument cluster, but it didn't appear larger than life the way an M3 or an S4 does.

I agree with the person who mentioned the Skyline GT-R. They added LEDs to the front, my neighbor has the new one. That's an $80k commitment though, but a clear winner over a 911 especially for young people who just look like a-holes in a Porsche.

I was comparing these two vehicles myself. The Lexus, although being a semi-luxury vehicle, seemed very cheap to me when I drove it. I didn't like the ridiculous looking exhaust either. Cosmetically, the M dominates the ISF. You just need to drive both and you will know. The Lexus did have power but didn't handle at all like the M. Nothing beats that redline either!

What experience do you have in either driving or owning an S4 or an M3 to be so definitive that the "Audi S4 is not in the same class as an M3?

Sure, but I'd like a son who will at least occasionally mow the lawn, take out the garbage, clean his room, take the dog for walks, detail the cars, and not look at me like I have no clue what's going on!

Mein Auto: Lexus ISF
After having a 335i for four years I was forced to buy a new car as my roof broke and the insurance company wrote it off. I drove the M3, the Rs5, the C63 and the ISF for two days each because I don't think you really get a feel for a car test driving for an hour or so.
The ISF felt better straight away so before giving each car back I went back to the Lexus dealer and drove the ISF again to get a good comparison. They are all great cars and all within my budget but I ended up buying the ISF because for everyday driving it was perfect but when I put it in M mode and use the paddles it is as exciting as the others.
Ps, I didn't even know the ISF existed until 4weeks ago.

M3 vs Lexus

I worked for Toyota for a long time and certainly appreciate their quality and reliability but just bought a loaded M3. When it comes to sporty the M3 wins hands down. The Lexus is the car for the ladies at the country club.
