Maybe it will be best to take it to a reputable independent shop, that has all the diagnostic equipment. After all, generic readers dont do much, specialist diagnostic are expensive, (ok there are copies around) and they take some time getting used to them, before you will know exactly what you are doing.

Harbor Freight has a code reader for $89. I bought one and it read / the codes fine. It will also work on most other cars. Won't reset the airbag and the expensive readers at the dealer give them more information. But, your likely to find an explanation of the code you have right here using the search function.

Buy a Peake. They read codes that are specific to BMW's.

A quick /scanner in the E39 bestlinks nets this $22 tester that many of us use:
- Cheapest CAN OBDII scanner on the net that reads DTCs, pending codes, & clears codes

Of course, there's always freeware (but you still need the cable):
- OBD II PC freeware & $15 J1962 cable for the BMW E39

In addition to the inexpensive stuff, a quick /scanner in the bestlinks nets these more expensive scanners.

- How to diagnose a typical BMW E39 engine misfire (1) & where to get the cheapest reasonable OBDII scanner in the world (1) (2) or a better overall scanner (1) or the best BMW diagnostic tools (1) (2) (3)

My suggestion?

Compare whatever you want with the 22-dollar scanner for the things that you care about.

For me, I'll buy a more expensive scanner when I need it - but - so far - I haven't needed it (100K miles).

I use an Equus 3100 scanner. Works very well and easy to use.

hi Bluebee,

Received maxiscan ms 300 and checked the code. The code was P0455. Clear the code and checked the gap cap. so far so good no code... driven 200 miles. the cap is good condition and I was not smelling any gas, so I decided not to replace cap and drive some miles and see if I get any code. so far no service engine light and codes

This scanner is not fancy, but for the price it is well worth it to have it. Saved $100..... Thanks Bluebee and others who helped me.

Bump

I actually started inquiring about ODBII readers to diagnose service engine lights in another thread. I just stumbled on this thread and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Autel MaxiScan MS300 on 2011 E90s, especially those with comfort access.
