01 740iL - Nav and radio problems

It seems that the problem I am having is a common one. Screen is black with fuzzy horizontal lines and radio shuts off approx every three minutes. Can turn radio back on but it shuts off again in three minutes and the screen stays black. Has anyone found the cause of the problem. I've seen a few different answers. thanks.

Usually your radio shutting off (but being able to be turned off & back on & it will play again for 2 mintues) is a sign your Nav unit is bad.

Have you had any electrical work done lately, your battery disconnected or drained?

The easiest way to test if it's your Nav, just swap the Nav with someone who has a working Nav & see if their Nav works fine in your car.

'01 740iL Navigation/Radio issue

I have the exact same problem. I'll swap out the Nav Module - but want to verify that it's the unit that accepts the CD -- NOT the Trimble unit.

Am I correct - or off base?

Correct - it's the Nav unit. I've never heard of a trimble unit going bad.

i started to experience the radio cutting off and on but my screen is working fine. i did upgrade to the larger screen and had to replace my trimble unit as it was not holding car location at all. my nav works fine when the radio cuts off. could there be another reason other than a bad nav?

It could be your radio itself, it's just more common for the Nav to go bad.
When your radio dies, if you turn the radio off & back on, does the radio go back on again for a short time?

Does the radio turn off at various times, or is it always shortly after you're started your car?

i took out all the components and checked for any loose connections, i replaced the fuse in the radio unit itself, replaced all pieces reconnected battery and had to re enter all data for computer. i drove the car for 30 munutes and the radio did not cut off at all. im wondering if for whatever reason the computer was double crossing itself and cutting the radio off as a safety factor. thanks for getting back to me and i will update if the problem presents itself again

01 navigation?

I also have the nav screen goes black, radio dies shortly after, turn off than on comes back.I just bought this 01 740il has no nav cd was just about to buy one online than this happened. I also have dsc ,brake, abs. and airbag light on. Could my ignition switch cause the error light and nav to fail or do I multiple problems. I got this car cheap but looks and runs good. I knew it had issues but just looking were to start nav system, ignition switch. I also have order most sensors that might pertain to the abs, brake light DSC system ,since not much love was given past the tires. All sensor look brittle do to are winters. but the radio just started today took out nav in trunk, turned on radio played for 5 min then shut off and stayed off is that normal. Can the steering wheel adjust be a culprit to. When i was having the nav issue i moved steering wheel came back on for a little bit than off, tried it again nothing took nav out and disconnected battery for 5 min nav and radio back on What would u do? Thank alot

Same problem

When I start the car (98 740il) with Nav, the airbag light doesn't light up, the radio doesn't come on the Nav screen is either black or stuck on the menu screen, the horn also doesn't work. The DCS and brake light is also on. After I drive for a while it will just pop back on sometime, if I hit a good bump it will all come back on. My speedomer has also stop working. I have had the car for 4 years, and besides a transmission problem I haven't had to do anything to the car, any idea what could be causing these issues, i know the Nav and radio, are on a different ECU than the dashboard.

Exclamation 2001 740IL w/same problem.

I have a 2001 740IL and replaced the battery less than a year ago. About a month ago, I was driving it when the nav went static lines and the radio stopped shortly after. I found that the battery was very weak because the next day the car would not start. I charged the battery and everything worked great. All of the Nav/radio problems went away.
I thought that the problem was fixed and was driving one evening when the whole system failed again. The battery was weak so I charged it again. All of the systems are working again. Does any one know why the battery does not seem to charge while the car is running? I sure would like some hints on what to look for.

For the person who first posted this problem, what is the state of your battery?

Thanks and good luck.

Re:

The Battery on the e38 seems to have at the most a 2 year life spam I don't if its true for everyone but I have had at least 4 batteries in 6 years even though everything checked out no battery draws they just died. I'm having the best luck with my interstate battery
