Need help folks: 2011 550i or 2012 650i Coupe?

Hi everyone,

I need to make a decision really quick and don't know what to do. I currently own a 2008 M3 Coupe loaded with all the options (but Cold Weather pkg). My lease is up in October so I started the car shopping two weeks ago knowing the car I want would have to be ordered. After negotiating the price of the car, I got a payment of $869 tax inc with only $1600 out of pocket with an MSRP of $75,325. I think it's a great deal but it is a car that it's already in transit from the factory and although it has everything I want, it doesn't have BMW Apps and Split rear seat...but it has Cold Weather Package and HUD and Carbon Black Metallic (which was my second choice, being Dark Graphite Gray II my first option)

I'm also considering a 2012 650i Coupe. Payment is $400 more a month though.

They're telling me at the dealership that if I wait to order a 2012 550i, the payment is gonna be much higher. So I only have 2 days to decide what to do (so if I want the 2011, I have to lock the rate).

My hesitation lays here: I'm afraid I'm gonna miss the M3 Coupe going into a 4 door sedan.
The 550i is equipped with M sport package though and many other options.

What do you guys think? I'd really appreciate your input.

Thanks

Well, I think those two cars are very different in term of practicality (2 doors vs. 4 doors). The price is also quite different.

In term of driving 5-series and 6 series are very similar. They are both much more comfortable and more of grand-tourer compared to your M3.

Since I am not a big fan of the new 6 styling, I'll pick the 5 series and pocket $400 per month.

I traded my 2006 650i coupe for the 2011 550i xDrive. The 550i is much more car especially with the new engine. However, the new 650i coupe also has the new engine and is about 4 inches longer than the old 650i. I got a lot more attention and ego boosting from the 6er but the 5 is much more practical. I live in Pittsburgh and needed the xDrive which I don't think would be available on the new 650i. I needed more headroom in the back now that my stepson is 6'3" (he's 18 and has grown a lot since I got the 650i in 2005). My wife also wanted a full back seat and four doors for our new 80lb Golden Retreiver. The back seat of the 650i is actually quite big for a coupe as the front seats have a lot of forward travel and can leave good leg room in the back. The headroom in the rear is also good for anyone less than 6'.

The new 6 will be a little lighter and faster than the 550i. Having one is great for the ego and women seem to love it. I got it originally because my wife wanted it over the 4 door. The 6 with all the same options will be around 20 grand more. But if you don't need the practicality and can afford the difference in price I would strongly consider the 6. But the 550i is absolutely awesome and you won't be disappointed. My options are listed below and I'm happy with all of them especially the suspension and transmission options.

Good luck and have fun.

Lease rates are hit or miss month by month, but it is likely that they would't be great the first couple of months in a model year.

As far as the 650 is concerned, I would love to have it's sport seats over the one's in the 550, but I don't think they are worth an extra $20k.

If you have the dough and don't mind spending it, the 650 is going to be a much "hotter" car than the 550. Two very different vehicles. I drove the 650 at the drive for team USA event, and I loved it. It's a big coupe, but it handled well and I love the changes they have made to the look.

New 6 Series is a head turner

Great question since I too am planning to upgrade to a 2012 BMW 550i. I saw both last week on the dealer's lot and the new 550i looks awesome especially with that M-Sport package. Then I saw the new 6 series convertible and that car just makes you want to drool. What an amazing revamp! I saw it again in action on the road with the top down in black and looked even better in motion.

Where the 550i is around $75K nicely loaded, the new 6 series was right around $100K, so still quite a difference in price.

Then I came back to reality and realized how can I make this work with 3 kids! I am forever stuck in the sedan & SUV worlds!

Well 650 Coupe is available now. If you can get a good deal on a EuroDelivery that may close the gap some.

Driving experience will be similar, but image is very different. Also 650 is tuned for a bit more power, but the Dinan upgrade can negate that.

I really struggled with the same decision only between the 535i x and 650i. I still really have the desire for the new 650i and look forward to getting one passing the new 535 to the wife.

Drove the new 650I convertable the other day and it is a rocketship! If you have the means its is totally the way to go if you arent really interested in a back seat.

If you can afford the 650i and do not need a backseat except for occasional convenience, get it.

I loved my 650i vert. They are not common, handle amazing well for the size and the power is sweet. Also, you will get it if still offered a 2 day driving course at PDC in South Carolina.(BMW pays hotel,2 dinners, driving course and golf or spa time). You pay airfare.
