Z3 M52TU still rattle after a lot of replacements :((((((

Hi

I'm new to the formu - and new to the BMW. 2 months ago I bought Z3 2.0 1999 in really mint condition [ 65000 km mileage ]. Problem is almost from the begining i'm fighting with very anoying rattle at startup.

1. It happens in warm-up phace. A start there is no rattle, then when the temperature is in 1/4 it starts to rattle while i add some revs [ around 2k ]. At idle there is i think no rattle. Then when the car warms up completely rattle is gone.

2. What was changed:

- new vanos unit
- side chain tensioner
- water pump
- belts etc
- sparks
- oli [ 0w40 mobil 1, car was driving on it whlie i bought it ]
- top tensioner / chain were inspected
- DISA was inspected

I'm lost with no ideas and BMW service is not helping either [ ther apear to work by procedures only ].

Here are 2 videos from yesterday. You can hear it better on second one i suppouse:

What do you think? Sound for me apears to be comming from or under intake manfold - but i may be fooled.

Get a mechanic's stethoscope and start probing. That will narrow it down to the actual component or at the very least an area.

Hi

They did it today. And after it - no clues (((. They suspect:

- intake manfold - in 2 days they will disaseble it to check it and look inside the engine + check pressure regulating valve
- lifters - is there a way to rule them off/test them??? [ shouldnt these be loud already at start ?? ]

VANOS rattle!
Even though you said the VANOS was already replaced, I'm assuming it was only the hydraulic unit that was replaced. The VANOS rattle originates from the mechanism inside the cam sprockets. A stethoscope will help confirm this.

The fix will be to either replace the sprockets or try the Beisan fix.

Whole number 1 on this diagram was repaced. Sound didnt change a bit:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...70&hg=11&fg=15

Also last week service checked whole intake [ dismounted it ] and found nothing .

Current ideas are bad chain guides [ they looked at chain only from top previously ] or rattling lifters [ but shouldnt these sound different ??? ].

are you sure that's the right oil ?....and..

is it to the proper level?...On the m52, if the oil level is even a quart low, you can hear an awful rattle up front and low(it's horrible!)..but completely disappears when oil is truly topped up(just over 7 quarts)...some owners even add oil slightly above full(NOT much, just slightly!)...perhaps the TU has a similar characteristic?..Hope you find the problem and if you do, why not mention it when and if?...Z3Cheers! dk'97 2.8 bg R, +1

Hi

First some info - oil level is max, regarding Mobil 1 0w40 - dont know if its ok oil but it has all the certificates and Mobil recommends it for M52TU.

I've been in new service just to double check the problem and currently both places suggest 2 options:

1] - change the oil to Castrol 10w60 [ Edge / tws ]
2] - inspect / replace chain + guides

Number 2 is a bit $$$. What do you think?

BMW USA recommends Mobil 1 0w40 for USA cars -

Might be an interesting experiment. But a heavier oil would just mask, not solve, the problem.

I bit thick - but still BMW allows 10w oil in Z3 [ car instruction data ].

In general problem is no one knows whats going on . At least 5 mechanics heard / checked the problem in 2 different places [ half of them with long BMW experience ] and there is no clue what to do . As you seen in previous posts a lot of parts were replaced and still nothing. So i'm left with giving up [ but this will destroy all fun with driving this car ] or going deeper.

Maybe its natural ??? - anyone has Z3 2.0 and could do a test for me?

1. Start a cold car [ after night ] or after minimum 2 hours breake
2. DONT REV it over 2k from start
3. when temperature reaches 1/3 of the whole scale [ after blue zone and nearing normal top position ] start to gently rev the car up to 2000-2500
4. In my car there is a rattle now - whats with yours?
