Why choose 5 series over E-Class?

Facing a decision. Why did you folks select the new 5 series over an E-Class?

Ultimate Driving Machine vs. a car for old people.

No, seriously, they're both very good cars in one of the most competitive categories in the automobile market. The Merc's interior is plusher and provides a more luxurious ride, even with the sports wheels. The BMW is sportier and starker. With the sports package, it's very much sportier. The interior is not as nice as the Merc's, but I prefer the clean, uncluttered look. Enginewise, there is no comparison between the 535 and the E350--the BMW twin-turbo inline six is the most sophisticated six cylinder engine in the world.

Different strokes for different folks.

Just Kidding.

The biggest reason for me is that Mercedes has a pretty horrible reliability track record. The people that I know that have a Mercedes are not happy with the amount of time their cars spend in the shop, and the inconvenience involved.

By the way, first year production is normally less reliable, and the E-class was just redesigned.

three things 1. driving dynamics. we drove an E-class wagon and it floated like a ship on the high seas. 2. manual transmission, 3. twin turbos.

I am in my first Bimmer and love it. I chose the 530 over an E320 because of three factors: 1. Reliability, the ratings are horible and a very good friend went through service hell with his E320 and its electronics. 2. The steering, while I thought the Merc was good, it was not in the same class as BMW. Just my feeling though. 3. Maintenance program. It just feels good to know I have nothing out of pocket for scheduled service. My wife has an MDX and its costs are very high with all the miles we put on. The Merc wasn't much better when I talked to the dealer. I will say this though about the Merc, I wanted the diesel reeeealy bad because of the mileage, but that one advantage wasn't quite enough.

My cousin has one that has been in the shop and had the entire brake system replaced, 4 times in the last year under warranty. No Thanks!

What he said. Except it's two things, I never drove an e-class.

Last E-Class redesign was 2003, a year before the E60.

I have had two E's a 2001 and a 2005. Both were great cars with NO problems. Am going to a 550i for a change.

Not that floating on the high seas is a bad thing, but I'd rather it be on a nice SeaRay with lots of booze!

The E550 was very unimpressive when I drove it. The 550i was extremely impressive when I drove it.

The BMW 5 er is much more sporty and has a leading edge design. The MB E Class is for grandfathers. I also admire BMW as company for their willingness to be innovators and take risks. My 550 Sport is a great car. I also enjoy Euro Delivery immensely which my wife and I do every 3 years.

The E is getting long in the tooth, 5er just had the revamp aka LCI. Having said that I might try the next E when it comes out.

Also the performance figures size for size, Merc's engines are lazy and inefficient.

What is LCI?

Good comments, all!

Is "piezo" fuel injection the same as "Direct Injection"?

Anyone pick BMW for features like the heads up display, adaptive break lights, real-time traffic info, lane departure warning, active cruise control with "stop and go"?

Anyone struggle with the mediocre crash test results?

My mother has an 07 E350 Saks 5th Ave. Breast Cancer Awareness edition. While I think it looks nice, I HATE driving it and don't really find it all that comfy. The seats are a nightmare and there seems to be a lot of cabin noise. I think it's funny because she says the same thing about our cars. She's had 2 MB's and both had a lot of problems. Random things just fall off of both of them, like inner fenders and mirror glass. Her newest one blows blue smoke on startup, only has 5500 miles. "Oh it's just been sitting a while" But guess who won? My dad is buying a new X5 when his lease is up in a couple of months on his ML. LOL

Brother in law has the E350 I have a 550. He likes the solid feel and snob appeal. I'm a car guy, almost nothing drives like a BMW and definitely not the MB E class.

Wouldn't dare touch a MB from the Daimler-Chrysler era, which explains why MB fell from the top in customer satisfaction when the merger took place in 98. Couldn't picture driving an E-class knowing it had the reliability of a Dodge Neon. Now that Chrysler's gone (yippee!!!), my interest in MB is starting up once again. But until the AMG division finally offers a 3-pedal manual transmission in their cars, I'm sticking to BMW mainly because their cars offer better handling/ride character. Oh, and they offer manual transmissions in their mid-size sedans equipped with a V8.

A family member recently turned in an E500 Sport at the lease end.
The suspension was dialable from float to taut on the fly, that was pretty impressive, and quite useful.
Over 39 months it had very little problems, but the driving dynamics of the cars (MB vs BMW) are quite different.

I think only 1-2 MBs can be had with a manual transmission (lower powered C class).

After 5 MB's, I wanted to like the W211 but found the E60/61's to be so much more comfortable and FUN to drive. I also prefer the smoothness of BMW's inline 6 to MB's V6.
