Congrats! Beautiful color, almost as pretty as Le Mans Blue!

It does tend to be a blur, but savor every moment! The journey is just beginning!

It looks like the rain and unseasonably cold weather have stopped and you have a nice day!

P.S. Don't forget the pens!

Adding my congratulations as well. The 335d in that color was my leading contender before BMWFS decided to start giving away leases on the E93M3. Anxious to see and hear more as your trip unfolds.

Nice color! It looks brighter than I thought it would be in the sun. I expected the color to be a darker blue - either way it looks great.

Getting there and day 1.

We left Sunday morning PHX->PHL-> MUC.

Our daughter (2) is no longer a lap child so everyone's sanity was much improved on the first leg. The downside her ticket cost $1,300.

On the the leg to Philly the women sitting in front of us was literally doing yoga in her seat. When the decent got bumpy her son started hurling. I always thought those little barf-bags on airplanes were mostly a joke.

The weather delayed our arrival. We originally had a two hour layover before the Munich leg and we barely made the connection. Unfortunately, the toddler didn't get a chance to stretch her legs or blow off any steam between flights.

Take off for the the international leg was also delayed because of a mechanical issue with the door. Unfortunately, they didn't figure this out until we were seconds from wheels up. So we had to sit around on the plane for an extra 2 hours as they taxied back to the gate and address the issue. On the upside the US Airways A330 was only half full so we had 4 seats in which to spread out. This didn't help the toddler get any sleep. She slept for only 2-3 hours and we all arrived in Munich bleary-eyed but no worse for wear. The lack of customs seemed to me to make Munich a drug smugglers dream. All of my prior European trips at least had a few lightly-armed guys standing around as a pretense.

Gathered our bags, hit the Deutsche bank ATM and rode the S-bahn into Marianplatz. Changed for the U3 to Sendlinger Tor where our hotel welcomed our weary souls with open arms. Monday night we stayed at the Motel One-Sendlinger Tor. Great location, only a pleasant 10 minute stroll to the center of everything and around the corner from the U3 to the Welt. The 2-star hotel is modern and clean with good service. However, the room was really small and with the toddler bouncing off the walls it seemed even smaller. Not bad for 84 Euro in Europe in late July, but it is much more suited to younger and single travelers. I would have thought it much nicer 10 years ago.

We grabbed a quick bite and settled in for a short nap. There was a small playground across the street so we took the toddler there to blow off some steam before going for a stroll around the altstadt. Our original plan had been to have dinner at the Augustiner Keller. However, that plan quickly got hijacked. 10 minutes after leaving the park we realized that we had left the diaper bag, including the wife's wallet/credit cards behind at the park. We quickly booked it back to the park and thankfully some nice local ladies had found it. They had phoned the polizei (perhaps they were a little nervous about an unattended bag after the events in Norway? We stuck around for the Funf-Zero to arrive and quickly cleared things up. Thankfully no harm no foul.

At this point we were starving and just wanted to eat before the toddler melted down. We had both been to Munich before but neither of us had been of drinking age at the time. So we braved the tourist crowds and headed to the Hofbrauhaus. It may be touristy but the pretzels and beer are good and the atmosphere festive. You have to like a country that serves beer by the liter. Wandered back to the hotel and hit the sack in anticipation of delivery day on Tuesday.

Random things that no matter how much I experience them I am still perplexed by. 1) Germanic bedding. Seriously, what's with the no sheet and massive down duvet in July? 2) the seemingly overly complicated system of paying for German U-bahn. It seems to combine the worst aspects of one-fee one-ride (NY) with a variable distance/cost model (DC). Yet it's mostly on the honor system. I am always paranoid of either massively over-paying or of being fined for not having a proper fare ticket. I guess the same folks who designed the E90 cup-holders also worked on the U-bahn fare system. But these interesting aspects of culture are why I enjoy traveling.

Just in case you're wondering why most German speaking people keep chuckling and giggling when you introduce "Frau Blau" to them:

"Blau" in German has the same slang meaning as "jagged", "pissed", "****-faced", etc.
If "Frau Blau" was the title of a German movie, an accurate translation might be "Miss Pissed".

So better stick to the English "Lady Blue" ... sounds much better, especially in German!

#7 Actually no, Porsche always wanted to have a 4-door product from day one. So more like they were too slow and lazy to get to it.

Day 2-3 Welt und Oberndorf im Tirol

There are now two historical periods that characterize my car-owning life; BED and AED-before European delivery and after. All my experiences up until Tuesday at 9:00am have ceased to have meaning and I cannot imagine buying a car any other way. Having read every thread on the ED board I had high expectations for the Welt delivery. Needless to say they were blown out of the water. Those who have done it know of which I speak. Those of you about to do ED, you will soon understand. Those of you who never will, I pity your cold joyless existence.

European Delivery day started off on les than stellar grounds. The whole family was jet-lagged out of our minds and awake by 2am. We tried to get the toddler to go back to sleep but by 4:45 we just gave up and got ready and headed to the Welt. The lack of sleep was not good as kiddo was a less than model citizen of the Welt premium lounge and mom and dad had frayed nerves.

The staff at the lounge went above and beyond the call of duty working very hard to make us feel welcome, especially kiddo. Hichem gave her a little BMW flag to play with (she loves flags), made an origami bird that entertained her, and put on a show by constructing an abstract swan carved from an apple. What a great experience! Even my BMW-jaded spouse was thoroughly impressed with the whole shebang. I can only say that I could live in that lounge and be very content. The roast pork was to die for. Iím married to a Cuban so I know a thing or two about pork.

Had Rolf (Loubke?) as our delivery guy. He was great! We decided to forgo the stairway to heaven as we had toddler and stroller in tow. I donít regret this one bit. A few minutes earlier I got to see my baby come off the elevator and get driven on to her magic disk. That scene is indelibly etched onto my brain and is an infinitely cooler way to get a first sight than from the stairs. They brought out a BMW racing teddy bear for kiddo who was thrilled. Did my lap and left her with the valet. We then spent the day touring the museum and Welt, and eating lunch in the lounge. The museum is completely different from when I was here in 1993. I am so glad I got to see the BMW Art Car exhibition! They were filming an interview with the head of BMW culture department about the art cars while I was there(yes that dude from the CNBC doc). I only saw one other American taking delivery that day (128i M-sport. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?) and one family from BC Canada (E92 M3). Everyone else was European. Lots of X3 and X1. The 335d got a lot of admirers in front of the Welt as I was installing the car seat.

Around 3:00 we set out for Oberndorf im Tirol, Austria (a few km north of Kitzbuhel). It was a pleasant hour and a half drive down the A8 culminating in some twisty mountain carving back roads. Stopped at the border to get a vignette and some diesel. We are in Oberndorf for 4 nights of relaxation at the small family-run Gartenhotel Rosenhof. The owners are very nice and the room is large by Euro standards. We also have nice views of the Kitzbuhler Horn. There is a heated pool and playground for children. Yesterday was sunny so we spent some time in the pool. As itís only in the mid-60s we froze our butts off upon getting out of the water. Afternoon drives in the mountains have proven a great toddler napping mechanism, and dad-335d bonding opportunity.

As for the car, wow! I am in love. The throaty growl of the M57 engine is sweet. And the ZF tranny is smooth. Only time will tell if I grow to regret no having the 6MT. The color combo is even better in person. So glad I went with Deep Sea Blue over Black/aluminum. DSB is a really dynamic color in different light. I really like iDrive. The ZSP seats and wheels are awesome. I have no idea how someone could think the sport suspension was harsh unless they had driven nothing but circa 1988 Buick/Olds/Cadillac. I have to remind myself that it is mine and I get to keep it.

Really enjoying your report thus far. Very impressive performance by Welt staff to accommodate your jet-lagged two-year-old. Lots of places/people would probably have just acted disgusted and tried to ignore her, rather than try to engage her. I'm sure that was a big help.

Looking forward to more..

Day 4: Kimmler Wasserfalle und Gerlos Hochalpenstrasse

Yesterday was cool and rainy so lounging around the pool was not a viable option. We decided to do a little exploring around the region instead and headed towards Krimml and the Krimmler wasserfalle. The water falls at Krimml are the largest in Europe and the 5th largest in the world. The drive from Oberndorf to Krimml took us over the Thurn pass and into the Hohen Tuern National Park. Lots of twists and turns and steep grades. At the falls themselves, water flows over three big drop-offs down to the valley below. There is a 2km winding trail up the mountain with about a dozen or so different points to see the falls from different elevations. It is about a 2 hour round trip hike if you go all the way to the top with gasthofs and restaurants at various places along the way. The falls are not quite as spectacular as Niagara Falls (few things are) but are still very dramatic. Because of the weather and the toddler in tow we confined ourselves to the lower portions of the trail.

The unexpected pot of gold at the end of the Krimmler falls rainbow was the Gerlos Hochalpenstrase (Gerlos high alpine road) that runs between Krimml and Gerlos. http://www.gerlosstrasse.at/en/gerlos-alpenstrasse/. I've read a lot of ED trip reports and I don't recall anyone having mentioned this little gem. I know the Stelvio, Fluela etc. are more popular but this 15km road is a real find. The road also has some stopping places with great bird's eye vistas of the Kimmler falls. The best part is that it was almost deserted on a Thursday afternoon. If you are passing by this area give it a try it will put a smile on your face. Watch out for the cows crossing the road.

The 335d continues to impress. Lots of alpine driving yesterday and the big d performed flawlessly. You really notice all of the low-end torque as it pulls like a bull out of switchbacks on the steepest of grades. Also passing on two lane roads was a simple and confident affair accompanied by the growl of the M57.

After yesterday's events the trip computer said 29.6 mpg over a 300+ km with very little autobahn and a whole lot of spirited mountain driving.
