Questions before I pull trigger on X3

Help with the following questions would be appreciated!

1) Is the 3.5 going to get a new engine in 2012? Or any other major changes? Does anyone really know?

2) What is standard deposit for an order?

The 35i will not be getting a new engine for 2012 or any time soon. $500 to $1,000 deposit is pretty typical when placing an order. I did $500.

I really doubt there would any changes for 2012 in the 35i (except maybe different packaging of options). Definitely no engine change.

Deposits are all over the map, I paid $2500.

I'm being offered 2200 off MSRP which may not be the best offer out there but seems within the ball park according to Edmunds. Any strong dissent?

The deal at 2200 off if pretty straight forward. I am sure there are better and worse.... Definetly in the park.

The real point is when you can get delivery? When is the dealer allocated for the build.

I put $2k down.

"Allocated" - They have told me they have "one allocation." I am not sure what that means.

That means that they have one car that they can modify to your needs. The question is when is the allocation. This month, next etc...then you can see when, appoximately you would get the car. If the allocation is march of next year $2200 of would not be that hot of a deal... Time is money... If you can get the 2200 and the car will go into production soon then take it. Where i live there are way more people than cars....

FYI, the 2012's will begin production in September so if your build slot is August and you would rather have a '12, then hold off for a September slot. Nothing major is changing on the 12's....perhaps only the way the options are packaged.

You can almost bet the price will also go up. And based on past experience, the packaging tends to get less flexible as the model years go on, so if you like the way it can be built, I would just get one now.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have some questions of my own regarding the X3.

1) When I try to configure an X3 on the BMW website, "BMW Assist with enhanced Bluetooth and USB" ($650) is automatically checked as an option and I can't un-select it. Is this option mandatory?

2) Is the cold weather package available with leatherette, or do I need to upgrade to leather? I have a 2-year kid and I hear leatherette holds up much better to wear and tear.

Agree, given demand...you know what happens....price up!

I see that...looks like it is mandatory...then not really an option is it...

Cold weather only with Nevada leather. I wouldnt stress it. The Nevada leather is historically tough!

One of the things I liked about the 3.5 is that I didn't care about the options or interior once I started driving it...just loved the feel of that engine and the handling. And this was on the streets of San Francisco.

So would love not to wait another month if I could avoid it and it did not make a substantial difference.

Now I am trying to find out from the dealer when production can start....but if they are switching in September (I had heard October) then it must be soon, right?

The BMW USA website isnt necessarily the most accurate. Given the lack of up-to-date ordering guides, I'd consult the BMW dealer. Technically there is no requirement for heated seats to be leather; historically this has never been the case with BMW. In Germany, ordering leather requires heated seats, but not the other way around.

I didn't want the now- required BMW assist as a required option. BMW of Monterey deleted the price (couldn't delete the option) and with that option price deleted, I paid $1500 over invoice- a savings of $2415. Only other cost is $55 doc fee.

It sounds like you may have a package selected (such as Technology) that includes the Bluetooth/USB.

For the other thing, no, upholstery has nothing to do with options and you can definitely get leatherette.

BMW requires BMW assist, which has been the subject of much discussion on this website. I don't want or need it, nor the Technology package. I had decided to wait until they deleted that required "option" when I found a dealer that would delete the price of the option, and give me a price of $1500 over invoice price not including the BMW Assist. In other words I got it free. Found my dealer on Truecar. Best price by far, though 80 miles from home. I recommend it.

I secured my allocation today at my high-volume dealer and they wanted $2500 deposit and I simplay said "no way" as this is my third BMW in 3 years and they made an exception and knocked it down to $1000.

If you're building a 35i...it comes standard..that's why you can't uncheck it.
