What oil weight should I use for a track car?

Golly, this must have been discussed to death, but I didn't find much track-related info in a search.

My car is a '93 325is. Mostly for track use. But also driving to the track and maybe a little street use, etc. I live in the midwest. It gets hot here, but not Arizona hot.

So what's a good oil weight to put in there?

(I'll use fully synthetic. And I'll spare you all the question of which brand and type to use- don't want to start any fights! )

15w-50 seems to be popular.

I would start with 10W-40 and if you see signs of oil consumption or high oil temperatures only then I'd go to 15W-50, RedLine of course .

I've moved to 15W-50 Mobil 1, as it seemed to be popular with the track crowd. That being said, I know of Spec Miata guys who use 0W-20. Using synthetic and changing frequently seem to be the most important factors...

The guy I bought the car from was a former motorcycle racer, although this car was never tracked. He used Royal Purple oil. It's got 20W-50 in there now. Doesn't seem to be leaking a drop. So maybe I'll stick with the Royal Purple, but maybe change the weight.
