Help with Key FOB. Car won't lock or unlock.

Hi guys/girls. I'm new to the board. I've had my '07 650 for about 2 years fairly issue free other than replacing the battery about 9 months ago. (Did not get a reset by the dealer, hopefully that is not part of this issue) But now all of a sudden my key fob will not unlock or lock the car by pressing lock or unlock or by touching the door handle (comfort access). When I pull the old fashion metal key out of the fob and use it to unlock the car it will disarm the the alarm unlock the doors and the car starts fine with the fob inserted. Today the navigation wouldn't load up either. I have never had any error codes issues etc. after changing the battery nine months ago.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be. Could it simply be the battery in the FOB or a bigger issue? I did some searching and haven't found much. About a week it the remote wouldn't work occasionally but after trying a few times it would work. Now nothing at all.

Any ideas/help appreciated.

Welcome to the 'Fest! I'm not a mechanical expert but there are many here who are... my guess is that you need to replace the battery in the fob (I believe it requires an actual battery swap out in the fob itself, in addition to keeping it in the wheel slot frequently for charging). My guess is that the idrive is unrelated to the fob, but would sugggest you try an idrive reset by pressing the following buttons simultaneously and hold until the gray "BMW" screen comes on:
Volume mute button + CD eject button + DVD eject button.

And failing to register the new battery does have a bit of a negative impact on the charging patterns and could reduce the performance/life of your new battery.

Comfort access fobs do NOT recharge when inserted in the slot, their battery is replaceable. The navigation problem MAY be related to the unregistered battery.

Thanks. I just discovered how to get to the battery in the FOB. I will replace it and see what happens.

FLL - welcome to the 'Fest. basic troubleshooting would dictate replacing the battery first. Page 38 in your manual shows how to do it yourself.

Simple $4 solution. Battery replaced and everything is back to normal now. NAV working also but seems to be loading a little slower than normal, maybe just a quirk not related to the FOB. May still reset the idrive.

Thanks for the advice. Always great info here on the forum.

Welcome FLL650i and glad to see that you have the FOB issue solved. I would take the car back to the dealer and have them double checked that the battery was registered. the car system maybe operating in a power saving mode since it may think that the battery power is still depleting, hence the Navigation issue.

I replaced my remote battery for my 645 using the DIY below:

Battery is a Panasonic 2020 3 volt coin battery $2-5 bucks at Radio Shack or Frys Electronics.

I did not have to reprogram the remote.
