2012 528x drive vs 2011 535x drive

Hello everyone

I am new to this forum and I want to buy my first BMW. I am looking into 5 series.
My dilemma is either to buy bmw 528 xdrive 2012 or buy 535 xdrive 2011 if the price has no major difference. I am planning to finance it.

For 535 xdrive 2011 model, my config is alpine white, black leather interior, alluminium trim, cold weather pkg, Premium 1&2 packages and sports package.

For 528 xdrive 2012 model, my config is alpine white, black leather, alluminium trim, cold weather pkg, premium pkg, premium sound pkg, sports package and technology pkg.

I recently went for bmw team usa test drive event where i discussed the price for both. both of them will cost me almost similar. I would like to know if from resell perspective is there any difference. This will be my first luxury car, so I kind of lack in lot of knowledge and I would appreciate any input or advice, good or bad, you might have.

thank you

It seems that many of the technical issues from the early '11 builds are worked-out. Also, the threads on this board show you the pricing options of the '12 models for comparision.
In my opinion, I'd go with the 535...the extra HP alone is worth it.

would that also make difference when i decide to sell it? would 535 x 2011 sell better than 528 x 2012?

535 with the extra horsepower is more fun all things being equal. The 2012 improvements on the 535 are minor. You are dealing with trade offs that are quite subjective.

If power is the major issue for you, then you should also check the price you could get on a 2012 535i xDrive, if it is similar to the 2011 price then it is an easy decision.

If price and resale are the major concerns then the 2012 528i xDrive should be the choice IMHO.

No need to over complex this ..... you are just wanting to decide if you enjoy driving the 528i naturally aspirated (NA) or the turbo 535i.

Drive both, even if just RWD, they are available now.

If the kick in the pants of the 535i lights your fire then that is what you want.

Of course this logic also leads to inclusion of the 550ix in your choice consideration but you seem to have at least narrowed it to the 28/35 choice! Two good alternatives

I just ordered a 535xi last week. I originally was going to buy a 2011 528, and did look into waiting for the 528xi for 2012. However, I am not sure about the start/stop technology for 2012. I then drove the 535 and was sold. Bottom line, it needs to be what you prefer.

My decision to buy a 2011 car ( 3 series) also hinged on this start/stop technology, I just could not figure out if I would like it or not so I decided to have other people test it for me, if it turns out to be ok, I will have it on my next car.

I was thinking of waiting for the 528ix in 2012, but we drove the 535ix and the 528i and immediately decided on the 535ix. Just picked it up on redelivery last Monday. Hands down, go for it. I think the price difference is about $4-5K?

if i am getting offer below should I pull the plug on 2011 535xdrive?

alpine white, black leather, alluminium trim, cold weather pkg, PP 1&2, sports pkg.

MSRP: 62825$
offer: 56400$ (includes 1730$ credit, I can get 1000$ less from the voucher from bmw drive team usa)

Or get similar to above config 528 xdrive 2012 for 56300$ minus 1000$, MSRP 60300$

What do u guys say?

535i XDrive. Are you "pulling the plug," meaning not taking the deal, or are you, "pulling the trigger," meaning you are taking the deal?

From what I understand, the stop/start function is switchable -- you don't have to use it.

+1. Don't drive the 535i if you really want a 528i. Same goes with the 550i/535i, I did not drive a 550i. I had already owned a 335i so I knew that's what I was sticking with.

A good price is always what you pay over invoice, not how much is taken off MSRP. I would say $250 and at most $500 over invoice is what you should aim for.

Why is there always so much resistance to tell people how much is reasonable to pay?? I think that should be a major mission of this forum.
Where is the best balance between dealer profit and the buyer not being raped without lubrication.

Open up and divulge the info. you may have.

61k with everything (tax, fees, etc.) The specs are in my signature. I ordered it at the end of March and it came at the end of May about 6 weeks from the production date.

Like others have said, the best price is around invoice. You can find the invoice price for your car with the specs on kbb.com or edmunds.com (excluding tax and fees). Mine was well below invoice so I had to jump on the deal. It was very well a steal for me.

Have you bought many cars before? The idea is to get the lowest price you can work, based on what you want to pay. What others get is not necessarily what you will get, based on volume, geographic area, etc, etc. I've bought 3 BMW's from the same dealer and I really didn't haggle all that much. I bought my 535i right around the time they first came out, July 2010, and I was happy with the deal. It wasn't nearly as good as what people are seeming to work now, but then, is everyone honest on the forum? Maybe, maybe not. Figure you might be able to get a deal near invoice and work it from there. It's really not all that difficult IMO. Decide on what your limit is and be prepared to reject anything higher. Do you really think if you tell your dealer "well Joe on bimmerfest got $200 over invoice" it will amount to anything for your dealer? If you can't get the deal you want, you might need to rethink your purchase.

keep in mind the 2012 528 wont be the same inline six you may have tested out, it will be a turbo 4 i believe. so its a single turbo 4 vs a twin turbo 6.
