E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

17" or 18" tires?

I am down to picking the last options for our 135i. The tires is still up for debate. I hear the 18" are much more susceptible to flats / road hazards. 17" are also available. How much will I sacrifice in drive feel with the 17", and how much will I gain in road safety - that is how much a problem is the road hazard with the 18"?

Also - is this the right place to post this question?

Thanks for your help!

Louise

I had the 17s on mine and they were fine. The 18s come with the M sport package and I believe are a staggered setup with wider tires on the rear. The ride will be harsher but at $1200 extra it's cheap because you get a better looking wheel and sports seats. I'd probably get the M sport. This is the right place to ask.

You're not really going to sacrifice much at all in performance and feel with the 17"- the trend towards upsizing wheel sizes is getting a bit out of hand. It's becoming more an appearance advantage instead of performance.

I have 2011 135i and I opted for the 17 inch wheel option. I went back and forth about this for awhile, my decision came down to the roads in NYC. I can't believe how bad some of the potholes are!!!!
I've had the car for about 7 months and I don't regret my decision at all. I'm not sure how much of a performance hit I took but the 18 inch wheels definitely look a lot better.
One interesting thing I noticed, I recently ordered summer rubber for the car and Tire Rack insisted I had staggered tires. I most definitely do not, all four tires are 205/50/17's.
