Seat Preference?

Looking at a prospective X5 I found one with the sport package, then it added the multi contour seats? It seems most people don't like the regular seats......Any input from owners on whether the Sport seats are more comfortable or if the multi contours are worth the additional $900? Thanks in advance!

The comfort seats are sport ones when you want them to be and sooooooo much more at other times. Spend the 900$ and consider youself lucky you did not have to buy them as a 3100$ package as i did.

I have regular seats and they are pretty hard. The headrest is pretty hard too.

I got a 535 loaner last week and the seats/headrest were amazing and soft. If you have the money go for it. I stopped and premium and tech package and the ipod adapter even though I wanted many more things

I ordered the multi-contour seats and they are awesome. They are my favorite option on the car and really comfortable for long drives. For $900 I would say go for it!!

I have the regular seats and they are stiff. I am always messing with the seat buttons trying to find a more comfortable position. Using lumbar support is overkill on these seats. Not comfy at all. Pay the extra for the upgrade.

totally correct. Too Stiff and I haven't found the right position yet. I keep adjusting seats but it's the same.

I didn't get all the options likes seats, music system assuming the ultimate driving machine will have some standard; I was wrong. The regular seats in the 35d are worse than those of honda accord and chevy malibu.

If you are gonna drop like $60K for a ride, it should be a no brainer to get the comfort seats. You shouldn't chintz at this price point. It is well worth the $.

Money was not an issue to me as far as seats go. I got the regular sport seats with my Sport Activity. I find them more comfortable for me then the Multi Contour Seats. I had the Multi Contour seats in my 535 as well, and found my back hurting on long drives. To me, the seat cushion was too short to the back rest. That part is not adjustable. I'm 6'1". I also prefer the look of the sport seats better. I don't like the sharp angle on the bottom part of the seat cushion. The leather there is never folded right to me and usually doesn't look symmetrical to the other side. The sport seats also have better shoulder support and the side bolsters are just right for me without any adjustment

I had a 2011 with sport seats and I thought they were fine. Not great, but fine. I now have a 2012 with multi-contour seats and they are absolutely worth the $900. Best seats I've ever sat in.

As to the comment about not finding mult-contour equipeed x5s on the lot - why not order your x5? It takes about 3 weeks to deliver and you get exactly what you want!

Multi-contour seats should come standard on these vehicles...

Also don't get confused with sports seats and multi-contou seats.. On my 5 series it was called sports seats and the adjustments are exactly the same as X5 multi-contour seats.. but apparently the sports seats on a X5 is different...

Maybe I'm confused.. But I got the multi-contour seats and it is one of the best and top priority option to get in any car.. your butt and back will thank you many many times.

In spite of any wait, I would still order my vehicles in general. These aren't washing machines or appliances- you should get exactly what you want. If timing is an issue, try another dealer who has a slot that can be modified.

Sport seats are okay, the multi-contour are better. The standard seats will make you regret settling for less on any trip longer than 1hr.

Spend some time at the BMW store and check out the sports seats, regular seats, and the multi contours. Also be sure to hook up the seat belt while you are sitting in there. It should be obvious but the seat belt positioning and the seat comfort along with the driving position are the most important ergonomics in any car IMHO. If you don't feel "right" it will not be a pleasant ride. Exceptions of course for high end italian cars -- which require you to fit them and if you don't -- tough. Do not however sit in any Volvo's while you are checking out seats. Those seats kind of ruin it for the rest of the pack.

I also don't find the multi-contour seats to be quite right for lower back support (I'm also 6'1"). Obviously they're great for most people given the responses, but there's something about the lumbar support that's a bit off for me. It feels ok for trips around town, but on long drives it gets a bit uncomfortable. I've fiddled with the lumbar support quite a bit and eventually settled on just having it retracted all the way and I wish it would actually retract even more.

The upper side bolsters are also a touch too close. I can feel them on my lats (the side muscles under your armpits). Not snug, but I'm aware that they're there even when pushed out all the way. I'm a 40" shoulder (suit-measurement), so it's something to be aware of when trying out the seats if you're wider than me at the shoulder.

The other thing I don't like is that the headrest doesn't tilt independently. The angle is fixed relative to the seat, and tilt is adjusted with the upper back support angle. So I can't really get head support without the upper backrest pushing uncomfortably forward. YMMV.

It may sound like I'm against the seats but I'm not. Overall they're fine, but they do have some drawbacks for me and I would personally rate them an 8 out of 10.

I guess we are built pretty close I can relate to exactly the same issues you are describing. I'm 42 Suit size and find the side bolsters on the multi-cotour seats intrusive on very long drives, even with them retracted out all the way they would rub my lats to the point of soreness. The lumbar issue that you are having is not a lumber issue at all. I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why I was getting so fatigued on long drives. It turns out, the seat cushion part is concave too close to the back rest. That makes the seat cushion "short" for me. I was deflating the lumber all the way back to get additional room while sacrificing lower back support. The seat cushion length is adjustable in a Lexus.

Previous vehicles I have driven were Lexus Rx (330 and 350) and Yukon Denali - my back would start hurting during long drives; now have X5 with multicontour seats - I don't even know what I did to adjust them but no back problems! Very pleased.

Love the multi contour seats. The seats were the one option on the x5 our bought used x5 that I didn't 'want' but now probably my favorite option.
